Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe

I've got a 2020 Infiniti QX60 with around 40,000 miles, and lately, the CVT transmission has been acting up. When I'm driving at lower speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic, it feels like the transmission is jerking or slipping. Sometimes, it feels like it's struggling to find the right "gear" ratio, and the RPMs will fluctuate erratically.

It's making me nervous about long drives. I've heard some stories about CVT issues in other vehicles, but I'm hoping it's not a major problem with my QX60. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their newer QX60? Any advice on what to check or if this is a known issue?

CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) issues like jerking, slipping, or erratic RPMs in a 2020 Infiniti QX60 at 40,000 miles warrant immediate attention. While CVTs operate differently than traditional automatics, these symptoms are not normal.

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: The most common cause of CVT problems is low or degraded transmission fluid. Infiniti CVTs require specific NS-3 fluid. Check the fluid level (if accessible) and condition. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid is a red flag. A fluid flush and fill might resolve minor issues, but only if done correctly with the right fluid.
  2. Software Updates: Sometimes, transmission control module (TCM) software updates are released to address shifting logic or performance issues. Check with an Infiniti dealership if there are any pending updates for your vehicle's VIN.
  3. Valve Body or Solenoid Issues: The valve body within the CVT controls fluid pressure and flow. Malfunctioning solenoids or a faulty valve body can lead to incorrect pressure application, causing slipping or jerking. Diagnostic trouble codes like P0741 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off) or P0776 (Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance/Stuck Off) can point to these issues.
  4. Internal Wear: Unfortunately, if the problem is severe, it could indicate internal wear of the belt and pulley system. This is a more serious and costly repair, often requiring transmission replacement.

When to See a Shop: Given the nature of transmission problems, it's highly recommended to have your QX60 inspected by an Infiniti specialist or a reputable transmission shop as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with a slipping transmission can cause further damage and potentially lead to a complete failure. Early diagnosis can save you significant repair costs.
