Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe with about 45,000 miles on it, and I've started noticing a really annoying clunking sound coming from the front end. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement, especially at lower speeds.

It sounds like something is loose, almost like a metal-on-metal clunk. It doesn't seem to affect the steering or braking, but it's definitely not normal. I've tried bouncing the front end when parked, but I can't replicate it.

Has anyone else experienced this with their QX60, particularly around this model year? I'm wondering if it's a common issue or if I should be preparing for a costly repair. Any ideas on what it could be before I take it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a common complaint and can stem from several components. Addressing it promptly is important for both ride comfort and safety.

Here are the common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Worn Sway Bar End Links: These are a very frequent culprit. The links connect the sway bar to the suspension, and their bushings or ball joints can wear out, leading to a clunking sound as the suspension articulates.
  2. Degraded Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. Over time, the rubber bushings that isolate these connections can crack or wear, allowing metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
  3. Failed Strut Mounts or Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, or the bearing within it can seize or become loose. This can cause a clunking or popping sound, particularly when turning or going over bumps.
  4. Loose or Worn Ball Joints: Ball joints connect the steering knuckles to the control arms. If they become loose or worn, they can cause clunking, especially when the suspension moves vertically.
  5. Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a loose bolt on a suspension component, brake caliper, or even a heat shield can mimic a suspension clunk.

When to See a Shop: If you're not comfortable inspecting these components yourself or lack the necessary tools, it's highly recommended to take your 2020 Infiniti QX60 to a qualified mechanic. Suspension issues can impact steering, braking, and overall vehicle stability. A professional can safely lift the vehicle, perform a thorough inspection, and accurately diagnose the source of the noise. Ignoring suspension clunks can lead to accelerated wear on other components and potentially compromise safety. Early diagnosis can often prevent more extensive and costly repairs down the line.
