Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX60 Essential

Hi all, I'm having a major problem with my 2020 Infiniti QX60 Essential. This morning, I went to start it, and nothing. No crank, just a single click sound from under the hood when I press the start button. All the dashboard lights come on, the radio works, and the headlights are bright, so I don't think it's the main battery.

I tried jumping it just in case, but no luck. Still the same click. I also checked the battery terminals, and they seem clean and tight. Could this be a starter issue, or maybe something with the immobilizer?

It was running perfectly fine yesterday. Any ideas on what I should look into? I'm stranded and need to figure this out.

It sounds like you're experiencing a classic no-crank, single-click symptom with your 2020 Infiniti QX60 Essential. While dashboard lights and radio functionality might suggest a good battery, a weak battery or poor connection can still prevent the starter from engaging properly.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Battery Voltage: Even if lights are bright, the battery might not have enough cold cranking amps (CCA) to power the starter. Use a multimeter to check the battery voltage directly. It should read around 12.6 volts. If it drops significantly (below 10V) when trying to start, the battery is likely weak or faulty.

  2. Battery Terminals and Cables: Double-check that both positive and negative battery terminals are not only clean but also tightly secured. Loose or corroded connections can restrict current flow to the starter. Also, inspect the battery cables for any signs of damage or corrosion along their length.

  3. Starter Motor: The single click often points to the starter motor itself. This could be a failing starter solenoid (which engages the starter motor) or the motor itself. The solenoid might click, but not have enough power to push the starter gear into the flywheel or spin the motor.

  4. Starter Relay: A faulty starter relay can prevent power from reaching the starter motor. You can often locate the starter relay in the fuse box (check your owner's manual) and try swapping it with a known good, identical relay (e.g., from the horn) to see if the issue resolves.

  5. Immobilizer System: While less common with a single click, a fault in the immobilizer system (NATS - Nissan Anti-Theft System) could prevent starting. If the security light on your dash is blinking rapidly or staying solid after you try to start, this could be a clue.

When to See a Shop: If basic battery and terminal checks don't resolve the issue, or if you suspect a faulty starter or immobilizer system, it's best to have your QX60 towed to a qualified mechanic or Infiniti dealership. They have the specialized tools to properly diagnose starter circuit issues, test the starter motor, and troubleshoot the immobilizer system.
