Vehicle: 2021 Infiniti QX60 Luxe

Hi everyone,

I'm having a major problem with my 2021 Infiniti QX60 Luxe. For the past week, the battery has been completely dead every morning. I've had to jump-start it multiple times. After getting it running, I sometimes see a 'Charging System Warning' light on the dashboard.

I had the battery tested at an auto parts store, and they said it was good, but it was low. I'm worried there's something else going on that's draining the battery or that the alternator isn't doing its job. Any ideas on what could be causing this? It's really inconvenient.

Thanks!

A 'Charging System Warning' combined with a dead battery points directly to an issue with your vehicle's electrical charging system or a parasitic draw. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Alternator Failure: The most common cause for a charging system warning is a failing alternator. The alternator is responsible for generating electricity to power the car's electrical systems and recharge the battery while the engine is running. If it's not producing enough voltage, the battery will drain.
  2. Loose or Corroded Battery Terminals: Even if the battery is good, poor connections at the terminals can prevent proper charging or lead to intermittent power loss. Inspect them for cleanliness and tightness.
  3. Faulty Voltage Regulator: Often integrated into the alternator, the voltage regulator ensures the correct voltage is supplied to the battery. A faulty one can lead to overcharging or undercharging.
  4. Parasitic Draw: This occurs when an electrical component continues to draw power even after the car is turned off. Common culprits include:
    • Aftermarket accessories (stereo, alarm).
    • Stuck relays.
    • Faulty interior lights or trunk lights.
    • Issues with the infotainment system or other control modules not properly shutting down.
  5. Battery Age/Health: While you mentioned it tested 'good,' a battery that's frequently drained and recharged can degrade quickly. Ensure the test was comprehensive.

Common OBD-II Codes Related to Charging System:

  • P0562: System Voltage Low
  • P0563: System Voltage High
  • P0620: Generator Control Circuit
  • P0622: Generator Field 'F' Control Circuit

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately, if the 'Charging System Warning' light is on. Driving with a faulty charging system can leave you stranded.
  • If you're experiencing repeated battery drains, even after checking basic connections.
  • A professional can perform a comprehensive charging system test (alternator output, voltage regulator function) and a parasitic draw test to pinpoint the exact cause.
