ABS and VDC lights on after brake pad replacement on my QX60

Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD

Hey everyone,

I recently had the front and rear brake pads replaced on my 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD. Everything seemed fine for a day or two, but now the ABS and VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) warning lights have come on simultaneously on my dashboard. The brakes feel a bit spongy too, which is concerning.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this after a brake service? Could it be related to the installation, or is it just a coincidence? I'm hoping it's something simple I can check before taking it back to the shop. The car has about 75,000 miles on it.

Any insights or common causes for these lights coming on together after a brake job would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's quite common for ABS and VDC lights to illuminate after a brake service if certain procedures weren't followed correctly or if a component was inadvertently affected. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Check Brake Fluid Level and Condition: A low brake fluid level can trigger these lights. Also, if air was introduced into the brake lines during the pad replacement and the system wasn't properly bled, it can cause a spongy pedal and trigger ABS/VDC warnings. Ensure the reservoir is at the MAX line.

  2. Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors: These sensors are crucial for both ABS and VDC systems. They are often located near the brake calipers and can be easily damaged, disconnected, or have their wiring stretched during a brake job. A faulty or improperly seated sensor will immediately trigger these warning lights. Look for any visible damage or loose connections at each wheel.

  3. Brake Caliper Issues: If a caliper piston was pushed back too forcefully without opening the bleeder valve, it could potentially damage the ABS modulator or introduce air. Also, ensure the calipers are properly mounted and not binding.

  4. Steering Angle Sensor Calibration: Sometimes, after work involving the suspension or steering, the steering angle sensor might need recalibration. While less common directly after a pad change, it's part of the VDC system.

  5. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The most effective way to diagnose this is to scan your vehicle's OBD-II system for codes. Common codes related to ABS/VDC issues include:

    • C1103, C1104, C1105, C1106: These typically indicate issues with specific wheel speed sensors (Right Front, Left Front, Right Rear, Left Rear respectively).
    • C1110: ABS Actuator and Electric Unit Malfunction.
    • C1120: ABS Solenoid Valve Malfunction.

When to See a Shop:

If checking the brake fluid level and visually inspecting the wheel speed sensor connections doesn't resolve the issue, or if you're uncomfortable performing these checks, it's crucial to take your 2018 Infiniti QX60 back to the shop that performed the brake service or to a trusted mechanic. Driving with compromised ABS and VDC systems can affect your vehicle's safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions. They will have the specialized diagnostic tools to read the specific codes and pinpoint the exact cause of the problem.
