Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD

Hi all, I'm hearing a noticeable clunking sound from the front end of my 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven roads. It's got about 85,000 miles on it.

The sound seems to be coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more prominent on the passenger side. It's not constant, only when the suspension is articulating.

Could this be worn sway bar links, control arm bushings, or even the struts? I'd appreciate any pointers on what to inspect. I want to make sure it's safe and not causing further damage.

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD, especially over bumps, is a very common symptom of worn suspension components. At 85,000 miles, several parts could be nearing the end of their service life.

Common Causes of Front Suspension Clunking:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the control arms. Their ball joints or bushings can wear out, causing a clunking or rattling sound, especially when one side of the suspension moves independently (e.g., over a speed bump).
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle frame. The rubber bushings at their pivot points can crack or degrade, leading to excessive movement and a clunking noise.
  3. Worn Struts/Shock Absorbers: While struts often manifest as a bouncy ride or poor handling, severely worn struts can also produce clunking sounds, particularly if their internal components are failing or if the strut mounts are compromised.
  4. Ball Joints: The lower and upper ball joints allow the steering knuckle to pivot. Worn ball joints can create a clunking sound and are a significant safety concern.
  5. Tie Rod Ends: Inner or outer tie rod ends, part of the steering system, can also wear out and produce similar noises.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the clunking is accompanied by a noticeable change in steering feel, vehicle handling, or if you hear grinding noises. This could indicate a severely failed component like a ball joint, which is a major safety risk.
  • As soon as possible: Even if the noise is minor, worn suspension components can accelerate wear on other parts and compromise vehicle safety and handling. It's best to have it inspected by a professional at your earliest convenience.

Steps for Inspection (Professional Recommended):

  1. Visual Inspection: A technician can lift the vehicle and visually inspect all rubber bushings, ball joint boots, and sway bar links for tears, cracks, or excessive play.
  2. Pry Bar Test: Using a pry bar, a mechanic can check for play in ball joints, control arm bushings, and tie rod ends.
  3. Listen for Specifics: Sometimes, a quick test drive over known bumpy roads can help pinpoint the exact location of the noise.

Addressing these issues early can prevent more costly repairs and ensure your QX60 remains safe and comfortable to drive.
