Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe

My 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe has started making a distinct clunking noise from the front suspension, particularly when going over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It's getting louder and more frequent lately.

It has around 45,000 miles on it, and I haven't had any major suspension work done. The steering feels okay, but the noise is really concerning. What could be causing this kind of clunking sound?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a very common complaint and usually indicates wear in one or more suspension components. Given your 2020 QX60's mileage, several parts could be reaching their service limit.

Here are the most likely culprits:

  1. Sway Bar Links (Stabilizer Links): These are very common failure points. The ball joints or bushings in the sway bar links can wear out, causing a metallic clunking sound as the sway bar moves independently over bumps. This is often the first thing a mechanic will check.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. They have rubber bushings at their pivot points that can wear, crack, or tear over time. Worn bushings allow excessive movement, leading to clunking, especially during suspension articulation.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of your front struts contains a bearing that allows the strut to rotate with the steering. If this mount or bearing wears out, it can produce a clunking or popping sound, particularly when turning or going over bumps.
  4. Ball Joints: While less common than sway bar links, worn lower or upper ball joints can also cause clunking noises. These joints connect the steering knuckle to the control arms and are critical for steering and suspension movement.
  5. Loose Components: Occasionally, a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose brake caliper can mimic a suspension clunk. A thorough inspection will identify this.

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly: While a clunk might seem minor, worn suspension components can affect your vehicle's handling, tire wear, and overall safety. It's best to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as you can.
  • Safety Concern: If the clunking is accompanied by noticeable changes in steering feel, excessive play, or a feeling of instability, do not delay. These could indicate more severe wear that could lead to a loss of control.
