Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX60 PURE

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2020 Infiniti QX60 PURE with about 40,000 miles on the odometer. Lately, I've been hearing a distinct clunking noise coming from the front suspension, especially when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or any uneven road surfaces.

The sound is most noticeable at lower speeds and seems to be coming from both sides, though maybe a bit more prominent on the passenger side. It's not constant, only when the suspension is working hard.

Has anyone else experienced this with their QX60? What could be causing this type of noise? I'm hoping it's not a major issue.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension over bumps is a common complaint and usually points to worn or loose components in the suspension system. Here's what's likely happening and what to do:

  1. Common Causes of Clunking:

    • Sway Bar Links (Stabilizer Links): These are very common culprits. The bushings or ball joints on the sway bar links can wear out, causing a clunking noise as the suspension articulates.
    • Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the control arms can deteriorate over time, leading to play and noise, especially when going over bumps.
    • Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints can also create a clunking sound due to excessive play.
    • Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the struts can wear out, causing noise and sometimes a creaking or popping sound when turning the steering wheel.
    • Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a bolt on a suspension component can loosen over time.
  2. Troubleshooting Tips:

    • Try to observe if the noise changes when you turn the steering wheel while going over bumps.
    • Listen if the sound is more prominent when one side of the vehicle goes over a bump versus the other.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: While a clunking noise might not immediately indicate a catastrophic failure, worn suspension components can affect your vehicle's handling, stability, and tire wear. More importantly, severely worn components like ball joints or control arm bushings can fail, leading to a loss of control.
    • You should schedule an appointment with a trusted mechanic to have the front suspension thoroughly inspected. They will lift the vehicle and check for play in all the aforementioned components. This is not typically a DIY job for most owners as it requires specialized tools and knowledge for proper diagnosis and repair.
