Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti QX80

My 2018 Infiniti QX80 has recently started giving me "Key Not Detected" warnings when I try to start it with the push button. Sometimes it works, sometimes it takes multiple tries, or I have to hold the fob right up to the start button itself. It's getting really frustrating.

I've replaced the key fob battery in both of my fobs with brand new ones, but the problem persists. It happens with both fobs, so I don't think it's an issue with a single fob. Is there a common issue with the keyless entry system on these QX80s?

I'm worried about getting stranded somewhere if it completely stops detecting the key.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Key Fob Battery: You've already done this, but ensure you used a fresh, high-quality CR2032 battery and that it's inserted correctly. Sometimes even new batteries can be faulty, or a low-quality brand might not provide enough voltage.
  2. Fob Signal Interference: Electronic devices (phones, laptops, other key fobs, or even certain medical devices) in your pocket or vehicle can sometimes interfere with the fob's signal. Try isolating the fob from other electronics.
  3. Intelligent Key Antennas: Your QX80 has several antennas located around the cabin (e.g., in the console, under the seats, in the trunk) that pick up the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas is faulty, damaged, or has a loose connection, it can cause intermittent detection issues, especially in certain areas of the car.
  4. Steering Lock Module (ESCL): In some Infiniti models, a failing Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) module can cause "Key Not Detected" issues, as it's an integral part of the vehicle's anti-theft and starting sequence. A fault here can prevent the ignition from engaging.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM): The BCM manages the intelligent key system and communicates with the key fob antennas. A fault or software glitch in the BCM could lead to these symptoms.
  6. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): A professional scan tool might reveal specific codes related to the intelligent key system, such as B2098 (Key ID Error) or B2099 (Key Fob Battery Low, even if you just replaced it, if the system isn't reading it correctly).

When to See a Shop: Since you've already replaced the fob batteries and the issue affects both fobs, this problem likely points to a more complex electrical issue within the vehicle's intelligent key system itself. An authorized Infiniti service center has the specialized diagnostic equipment (CONSULT-III Plus) to accurately diagnose the problem. They can check the signal strength from your fobs, test the intelligent key antennas, and diagnose the ESCL or BCM if necessary. This is not a DIY fix and requires professional attention for proper diagnosis and repair.
