Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti QX80 Luxe

Hi everyone, I'm dealing with an annoying issue on my 2019 Infiniti QX80 Luxe. The ABS light, Traction Control light, and the 'VDC OFF' light all came on simultaneously yesterday and haven't turned off. There's no check engine light, and the car seems to be driving normally, but I know these systems are important for safety.

I checked the brake fluid level, and it's full. I also tried turning the car off and on multiple times, but the lights remain. I haven't hit any potholes recently or done anything unusual.

Could this be a wheel speed sensor, or something more complex with the ABS module? Has anyone else had this happen with their QX80? What was the solution? Thanks for any insights!

ClearTheCode Admin Answer:

It's concerning when the ABS, Traction Control, and VDC OFF lights illuminate on your 2019 Infiniti QX80 Luxe, even if the vehicle seems to be driving normally. These lights indicate a fault within the vehicle's braking and stability control systems, which are critical for safety.

Here are the most common causes for these lights to come on:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS): This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/VDC system can't accurately determine wheel speeds, leading to these warning lights. A faulty WSS often triggers specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that a professional scanner can read.

  2. Wiring or Connectors: Damage to the wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor or the ABS module itself can cause intermittent or permanent faults. Corrosion or loose connections are also possibilities.

  3. ABS Control Module: Less common but more serious, the ABS control module (which often includes the hydraulic control unit) can fail. This module processes data from the wheel speed sensors and controls the ABS and VDC functions. A failing module will almost certainly trigger these warning lights.

  4. Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes cause VDC and ABS lights to illuminate, as the system relies on accurate brake pedal position information.

  5. Low Battery Voltage: In some cases, a weak or failing battery can cause various electronic systems, including ABS/VDC, to malfunction and trigger warning lights due to insufficient voltage.

When to See a Shop: Even without a Check Engine Light, these warning lights indicate a system malfunction that compromises your vehicle's safety features. It's highly recommended to take your QX80 to a qualified mechanic or Infiniti dealership as soon as possible. They will:

  • Use a specialized diagnostic scanner to read ABS/VDC specific trouble codes. These codes are different from standard engine codes and are essential for pinpointing the exact issue.
  • Inspect all wheel speed sensors and their wiring for damage or contamination.
  • Test the functionality of the ABS control module.
  • Ensure proper brake fluid pressure and system integrity.

Do not ignore these lights, as your ABS and VDC systems may not function correctly in an emergency braking or evasive maneuver situation.
