Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti QX80 Luxe

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a used 2019 Infiniti QX80 Luxe with about 60,000 miles on it. I'm trying to catch up on any deferred maintenance, and I'm wondering about the differential fluid. I plan on doing some light towing in the future.

What's the recommended interval for changing the front and rear differential fluid on these QX80s? Also, what type of fluid should I be using? Is this a straightforward DIY job, or are there any special considerations?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Great initiative to address the differential fluid on your 2019 Infiniti QX80, especially with plans for towing. Differential fluid is often overlooked but is crucial for the longevity of your drivetrain.

  1. Recommended Interval:
    • Normal Driving: Infiniti typically recommends inspecting differential fluid every 30,000 miles and replacing it every 60,000 miles for normal driving conditions.
    • Severe Duty (Towing/Off-roading): Since you plan on light towing, it's wise to consider the severe duty schedule, which often recommends replacement every 30,000 miles or even annually, depending on the severity and frequency of towing. Consult your owner's manual for the exact severe duty schedule.
  2. Fluid Type:
    • For both the front and rear differentials on your QX80, you'll typically need a GL-5 rated 75W-90 gear oil. Always double-check your owner's manual for the precise specification, as using the wrong fluid can lead to premature wear.
    • The QX80's differentials do not typically require limited-slip additive unless you have an aftermarket limited-slip differential installed, which is rare for stock vehicles.
  3. DIY Feasibility: Changing differential fluid is a relatively straightforward DIY task for someone with basic mechanical skills and tools.
    • Tools Needed: You'll need a wrench for the drain and fill plugs (often a large hex or square drive), a fluid pump (essential for refilling), a drain pan, and rags.
    • Procedure: Locate the fill plug first (always remove this first to ensure you can refill it!). Then remove the drain plug and allow the old fluid to drain completely. Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer. Use the fluid pump to fill the differential with new gear oil until it just starts to seep out of the fill hole. Reinstall the fill plug with a new washer.
  4. Special Considerations:
    • Warm Fluid: It's best to drain the fluid when it's warm (after a short drive) as it will flow out more easily.
    • New Washers: Always use new crush washers for both the drain and fill plugs to prevent leaks.
    • Torque Specs: Ensure you torque the drain and fill plugs to the manufacturer's specifications to avoid stripping threads or leaks.
  5. When to See a Shop:
    • If you're uncomfortable working under the vehicle or lack the necessary tools.
    • If you notice any unusual noises from the differentials, as this could indicate internal wear requiring professional inspection.
