Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX80 Luxe

Hello fellow Infiniti owners,

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2020 Infiniti QX80 Luxe. It has about 45,000 miles on it, and recently, I've noticed a rough idle, especially when I'm stopped at a light. The engine feels like it's shaking more than usual. The check engine light came on yesterday, and when I scanned it, I got multiple misfire codes (P0301, P0303, P0305 – Misfire Detected Cylinder 1, 3, 5).

It's running a bit sluggish, and I can hear a slight irregular thump sometimes. I'm hoping it's something relatively simple like spark plugs or ignition coils. Any insights or similar experiences with the 5.6L V8 engine? What should I be looking at first?

Multiple misfire codes (P030X) on your 2020 Infiniti QX80's VK56VD engine indicate that one or more cylinders are not firing correctly. This can lead to rough idle, reduced power, and decreased fuel economy. It's important to diagnose and fix misfires promptly, as unburnt fuel can damage the catalytic converters.

Common Causes for Misfires (P030X):

  1. Ignition System Issues:
    • Spark Plugs: Worn, fouled, or incorrectly gapped spark plugs are a very common cause. Given your mileage, it's a good time to check them.
    • Ignition Coils: A failing ignition coil will prevent a cylinder from firing. Since you have multiple misfires on specific cylinders, it's possible you have more than one faulty coil, or a shared component affecting those cylinders.
  2. Fuel System Issues:
    • Fuel Injectors: Clogged, dirty, or faulty fuel injectors can lead to an insufficient fuel supply to a cylinder, causing a misfire. Infiniti's direct injection system can sometimes be prone to carbon buildup on intake valves, though less directly causing misfires on the injector side.
    • Low Fuel Pressure: A failing fuel pump or clogged fuel filter could lead to overall low fuel pressure, affecting multiple cylinders.
  3. Air/Vacuum Leaks: Unmetered air entering the engine can disrupt the air-fuel mixture, leading to misfires. Check for cracked vacuum lines, intake manifold gaskets, or a faulty PCV valve.
  4. Compression Issues: Less common, but low compression in a cylinder due to worn piston rings, valve issues, or a head gasket leak can cause misfires. A compression test would be needed to confirm this.
  5. MAF Sensor: A dirty or faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor can send incorrect air intake readings to the ECU, leading to an improperly balanced air-fuel mixture across all cylinders.

When to See a Shop:

  1. Prompt Diagnosis: While you can check spark plugs and coils yourself, multiple misfires warrant a professional diagnostic. Driving with persistent misfires can damage your catalytic converters, which are very expensive to replace.
  2. Advanced Diagnostics: A technician can perform a comprehensive diagnostic, including checking fuel pressure, performing a cylinder balance test, inspecting fuel injector patterns, and potentially a compression test.
  3. Specialized Tools: Replacing ignition coils and spark plugs on a V8 engine, especially those hidden under the intake manifold, can be challenging without the right tools and experience. A shop will also have access to Infiniti-specific diagnostic software to pinpoint the exact cause more efficiently.
