Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX80 Sensory

Hi all,

I'm experiencing a worrying problem with the LED headlights on my 2022 Infiniti QX80 Sensory. The driver's side headlight, in particular, has started flickering quite noticeably, especially when I first turn them on. Sometimes, it even goes out completely for a few seconds before coming back on. The passenger side has flickered once or twice too.

This is a brand new car, and I'm really surprised to be having this kind of electrical issue already. It's making night driving a bit stressful. Has anyone else with a newer QX80 or other Infiniti model had similar LED headlight problems? What was the cause or solution?

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering or intermittent failure of LED headlights on a newer vehicle like your 2022 QX80 can be concerning. Here are the most common causes for such issues:

  1. Faulty LED Driver/Ballast: Unlike traditional bulbs, LEDs require a 'driver' or 'ballast' to regulate the power supplied to them. If this component is failing, it can cause flickering or complete intermittent failure of the LED unit. This is a very common point of failure for LED lighting systems.
  2. Loose Wiring Connection: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the headlight assembly or within the wiring harness can cause intermittent power delivery, leading to flickering. This might be exacerbated by vibrations during driving.
  3. Moisture Ingress: Water or condensation inside the headlight housing can short circuit components or corrode connections, leading to erratic behavior. Check for any signs of moisture inside the lens.
  4. Grounding Issues: A poor ground connection for the headlight circuit can cause voltage fluctuations, resulting in flickering. This requires checking the ground points for cleanliness and tightness.
  5. Headlight Assembly Fault: In some cases, the entire LED headlight assembly itself might have an internal defect, requiring replacement of the whole unit.
  6. Vehicle Voltage Fluctuations: While less common on a new vehicle, issues with the vehicle's charging system (alternator, battery) causing unstable voltage could potentially affect sensitive LED components. However, this would usually manifest in other electrical issues as well.

When to See a Shop:

  • Given that your 2022 QX80 is a new vehicle, this issue should be covered under warranty. It's highly recommended to take it to an authorized Infiniti dealership immediately.
  • Do not attempt to diagnose or repair complex LED headlight systems yourself, as they are often sealed units and can be expensive to replace if damaged.
  • A dealership can use specialized diagnostic tools to check for fault codes related to the lighting control module and perform specific tests on the LED headlight unit and its driver. There are no generic OBD-II codes for headlight flickering, but Infiniti's system can often log specific BCM (Body Control Module) or lighting module codes related to power delivery or component failure.
