Vehicle: 2023 Infiniti QX80 Sensory

I'm having a problem with the backup camera on my 2023 Infiniti QX80 Sensory. When I shift into reverse, the screen just goes black, or sometimes it shows a 'No Signal' message. It's not consistent; sometimes it works perfectly, and other times it's completely out. The rest of the infotainment system works fine.

This is a brand new vehicle, and it's really frustrating not having a reliable backup camera, especially with a vehicle this size. I've checked for any obvious obstructions on the camera lens, but it's clean. Could this be a loose connection, a faulty camera, or something with the display unit itself?

Has anyone with a newer QX80 experienced this? What was the fix?

A backup camera malfunction on a new 2023 Infiniti QX80 is definitely an inconvenience and points to an electrical issue. Given the intermittent nature, it's likely a connection or a component that's failing intermittently.

  1. Loose Connection: The most common cause for intermittent backup camera issues is a loose or corroded connection. This could be at the camera itself (located on the tailgate), where the wiring harness connects to the infotainment unit, or within the harness running through the tailgate.
  2. Faulty Camera Unit: The camera unit itself can fail. Internal components or the lens assembly can degrade, leading to intermittent signal loss or a completely black screen. This is more common in older vehicles but can happen with new ones due to manufacturing defects.
  3. Wiring Harness Damage: The wiring harness that runs from the camera through the tailgate and into the vehicle's body can become pinched, frayed, or damaged, especially in areas that flex when the tailgate is opened and closed. This can cause intermittent breaks in the signal.
  4. Infotainment Control Module: While less likely if the rest of your infotainment system is working perfectly, the module responsible for processing the camera's video signal could have an internal fault.
  5. Software Glitch: A minor software bug in the infotainment system could also cause the camera not to activate properly. A system reset (as mentioned in the Q50 thread) might temporarily help, but a dealer-level software update would be more comprehensive.

Relevant OBD-II Codes (Examples):

  • B2XXX series: Body electrical codes, potentially related to camera or video input issues.
  • UXXXX series: Network communication codes if the camera module isn't communicating with the main infotainment unit.

When to See a Shop: Since your 2023 Infiniti QX80 is a new vehicle, it's almost certainly under warranty. You should take it to an authorized Infiniti dealership immediately. They will have the tools and expertise to:

  • Check for specific diagnostic trouble codes related to the camera system.
  • Inspect the camera unit and its wiring for any physical damage or loose connections.
  • Test the continuity of the wiring harness.
  • Perform diagnostics on the infotainment control module.
  • Replace the camera or repair the wiring under warranty if a fault is found.

Do not attempt to troubleshoot this yourself, as it could potentially void parts of your warranty or cause further damage.
