Reduced AC Airflow & Dusty Cabin on 2021 QX80 - Air Filters?

Vehicle: 2021 Infiniti QX80 Sensory

I've noticed a significant reduction in the airflow from my AC vents in my 2021 Infiniti QX80, even when the fan is on high. Also, the cabin seems dustier than usual, and I sometimes smell a musty odor. My QX80 has about 40,000 miles on it.

I'm thinking it might be time to replace the cabin air filter, and maybe the engine air filter too. What are the recommended intervals for these, and are they easy to replace myself on a QX80?

  1. Diagnosis: Clogged Air Filters: Your symptoms – reduced AC airflow, dusty cabin, and a musty odor – are classic indicators of a clogged cabin air filter. The engine air filter, while not directly affecting cabin air, is also due for inspection and potential replacement at your mileage.
  2. Cabin Air Filter:
    • Function: Filters dust, pollen, pollutants, and other airborne particles from the air entering your vehicle's cabin through the HVAC system.
    • Recommended Interval: Typically every 15,000 to 20,000 miles, or once a year, especially if you drive in dusty environments or have allergies. At 40,000 miles, yours is almost certainly due.
    • DIY Difficulty: Very easy on most Infiniti models, including the QX80. It's usually located behind the glove box. You'll typically just need to open the glove box, unclip a few retaining arms, and slide out the old filter. Installation is the reverse.
  3. Engine Air Filter:
    • Function: Filters air entering the engine, protecting it from dirt and debris. A clean filter ensures proper air-fuel mixture and optimal engine performance.
    • Recommended Interval: Generally every 30,000 miles or every 2-3 years. At 40,000 miles, it's a good time to replace it.
    • DIY Difficulty: Also very easy. It's located in the air filter housing under the hood. You'll usually just need to unclip a few fasteners or loosen a couple of screws to open the housing and swap the filter.
  4. Why It's Important:
    • Cabin Filter: Improves air quality, reduces odors, and maintains proper HVAC airflow.
    • Engine Filter: Ensures optimal engine performance, fuel efficiency, and protects internal engine components from wear.
  5. When to See a Shop: If replacing both filters doesn't improve AC airflow or eliminate the musty odor, you might have a more complex issue such as a clogged AC drain, a failing blower motor, or mold growth deeper within the HVAC system, which would require professional diagnosis.
