Vehicle: 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude

Hi everyone,

I'm having some serious transmission issues with my 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude (2.4L, 9-speed auto). Lately, it's been shifting really hard, especially between 1st and 2nd gear, and sometimes it feels like it's getting stuck in a gear. To top it off, I just got a "Service Shifter" message on the dash, and the Check Engine Light came on.

I've heard these 9-speed transmissions can be problematic. Is this a common issue? What could be causing the hard shifts and the shifter message? I'm worried this is going to be an expensive fix. Any advice on what I should check or what the typical culprits are for this kind of problem?

Thanks for your help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 9-speed automatic transmission (ZF 9HP) in your 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude has had its share of known issues, and hard shifting combined with a "Service Shifter" message and CEL is a strong indicator of a transmission control problem. This is a common concern for owners of this generation.

Common Causes for Hard Shifting & "Service Shifter" on 2016 Cherokee:

  1. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software: Early versions of the TCM software had bugs that caused erratic shifting. Updates are often available.
  2. Valve Body Issues: The valve body controls the hydraulic pressure for gear changes. Internal issues or solenoid failures within the valve body are common.
  3. Shifter Module Failure: The "Service Shifter" message specifically points to a potential issue with the electronic shifter module itself, or its communication with the TCM.
  4. Transmission Fluid Level/Condition: While less common to cause a "Service Shifter" message, low or degraded transmission fluid can contribute to hard shifts.
  5. Internal Transmission Wear: In some cases, internal clutch pack or component wear can lead to these symptoms, though often preceded by other warning signs.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Scan for Codes: The CEL indicates there are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored. Common codes related to these symptoms might include:
    • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (general TCM fault)
    • P1C87: Shifter Actuator Performance (points directly to shifter module)
    • P1D83: Transmission Gear Ratio Error (indicates shifting issues)
    • Other P-codes related to specific shift solenoids.
  2. Check Transmission Fluid (if possible): Some models have sealed transmissions, but if yours has a dipstick, check the fluid level and condition. Note that proper checking often requires specific procedures and temperature ranges.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Given the "Service Shifter" message and hard shifting, it's highly recommended to have your vehicle inspected by a qualified transmission specialist or a Jeep dealership as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with these symptoms could lead to further, more severe transmission damage.
  • Software Updates: A dealer can check for and apply any outstanding TCM software updates that might resolve the shifting issues.
  • Professional Diagnosis: A shop will use advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause, whether it's the shifter module, valve body, or another internal component.
