Vehicle: 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude

Hi everyone,

I own a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude with the Uconnect 8.4-inch system. Lately, I've been experiencing some really annoying electrical glitches. The infotainment screen will randomly flicker, sometimes it goes completely black for a few seconds, and then comes back on. It's like it's losing power or something.

On top of that, my backup camera has become very intermittent. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times it's just a black screen with the 'Check Surroundings' message, or it freezes on a distorted image. I've tried restarting the car, but the issues persist. Could this be a loose wire, a faulty Uconnect module, or something else entirely? It's making navigation and parking a real pain.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent infotainment and backup camera issues in a 2017 Jeep Cherokee often point to problems with the Uconnect system itself, its wiring, or the camera module. These systems are complex and rely on stable power and data connections.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Software Glitch:

    • Uconnect Update: Ensure your Uconnect system is running the latest software version. You can check for updates on the Uconnect website using your VIN. Sometimes, a software bug can cause these types of display and camera issues.
    • Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of the Uconnect system. This usually involves holding down specific buttons (e.g., the volume and tuner knobs simultaneously for 10-20 seconds) until the screen reboots. Consult your owner's manual for the exact procedure.
  2. Wiring and Connections:

    • Loose Connections: The most common culprit for intermittent issues is a loose or corroded electrical connection. This could be at the back of the Uconnect head unit, the camera module itself (often located near the tailgate), or along the wiring harness.
    • Damaged Wiring: Inspect the wiring harness, especially where it passes through the tailgate hinge area, for any signs of fraying, pinching, or damage. Constant opening and closing of the tailgate can stress these wires.
  3. Faulty Components:

    • Uconnect Head Unit: If software and wiring are ruled out, the Uconnect head unit itself might be failing, leading to the flickering and freezing.
    • Backup Camera Module: The camera module or the camera itself could be faulty, causing the intermittent black screen or distorted images.

Diagnostics:

  • A dealership or specialized audio shop can use diagnostic tools to check for fault codes related to the infotainment system (e.g., B1561 - Display Control Module Fault, B1567 - Camera Module Fault) and perform specific tests on the Uconnect system.

When to See a Shop: If a software update or a soft reset doesn't resolve the issue, it's best to have a professional diagnose your Cherokee. Tracing electrical issues, especially intermittent ones, can be challenging without proper tools and expertise. A technician can thoroughly inspect the wiring, test the Uconnect module, and determine if the camera or head unit needs replacement. This will prevent further frustration and ensure your safety with a reliable backup camera.
