2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude - Random ABS/Traction Control Lights

Vehicle: 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude

My 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude has developed a really annoying electrical gremlin. Randomly, while driving, the ABS light and the Traction Control light will illuminate on the dash. Sometimes they stay on for a whole trip, other times they'll flicker and go off after a few minutes.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it – not specific speeds, turns, or weather conditions. I haven't noticed any actual performance issues with the brakes or traction, but those lights are concerning. I've checked the brake fluid, and it's fine.

Has anyone else with a 2017 Cherokee experienced this? Could it be a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious with the ABS module? Any advice on what to look for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent ABS and Traction Control lights on your 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude are a classic symptom of a fault within the anti-lock braking system, most commonly a wheel speed sensor issue. These sensors are crucial for the ABS and Traction Control systems to function correctly.

Here's what you should investigate:

  1. OBD-II Scan for ABS/Wheel Speed Sensor Codes: The first and most important step is to get an advanced OBD-II scanner that can read ABS-specific codes (not all basic scanners can). Look for codes like:
    • C0031 - C0034: (Left Front, Right Front, Left Rear, Right Rear) Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C0040 - C0043: Wheel Speed Sensor Signal Performance Issue
    • U0401: Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM A (less common for this specific issue, but indicates communication problems) These codes will pinpoint which wheel speed sensor or circuit is faulty.
  2. Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors and Wiring: Once you have a code, visually inspect the identified wheel speed sensor and its wiring harness. Look for:
    • Physical damage to the sensor (cracks, debris).
    • Fraying, cuts, or corrosion on the wiring.
    • Loose connections at the sensor or where the harness connects to the main vehicle wiring.
    • Dirt, rust, or metal shavings on the sensor's magnetic tip or the tone ring it reads from.
  3. Brake Fluid Level and Condition: While you mentioned checking it, ensure the fluid is at the correct level and isn't excessively dirty. Low fluid can sometimes trigger brake-related warnings, though usually not specifically ABS/Traction Control without other brake issues.
  4. ABS Module: Less common for intermittent issues, but a failing ABS control module can also cause these lights. However, this is usually accompanied by more consistent errors or complete system failure.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you cannot read ABS-specific codes with your scanner.
  • If visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious problem.
  • If replacing a suspected wheel speed sensor doesn't resolve the issue.
  • While the vehicle might seem to drive normally, a malfunctioning ABS/Traction Control system means these critical safety features won't work when you need them most. It's crucial to have this diagnosed and repaired by a professional to ensure your safety.
