Vehicle: 2019 Jeep Compass Limited

Hey everyone, I'm having a serious issue with my 2019 Jeep Compass Limited with the 2.4L Tigershark engine. It's consuming an alarming amount of oil – I'm having to add a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles. On top of that, it's recently started stalling unexpectedly, usually when coming to a stop or at low speeds.

The check engine light has come on a few times, but it usually clears itself. I haven't been able to catch a specific code yet, but I'm worried this oil consumption is leading to other problems. Is this a known issue with the 2.4L Tigershark?

Any thoughts on what might be going on would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your 2019 Jeep Compass with the 2.4L Tigershark engine exhibiting excessive oil consumption and stalling is unfortunately a well-documented issue. This engine family has a history of these problems, often leading to various drivability concerns.

Common Causes:

  1. Piston Ring Design Flaw: The primary cause of excessive oil consumption in the 2.4L Tigershark engine is a design flaw with the piston rings, which can lead to oil blow-by and burning. This is a known issue that has prompted extended warranty coverage for some vehicles.
  2. PCV System Issues: A clogged or faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve or system can contribute to increased oil consumption by not properly ventilating crankcase gases.
  3. Low Oil Pressure/Sludge: Excessive oil consumption can lead to critically low oil levels, which in turn can cause low oil pressure. This can trigger warning lights (P0520 - Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction) and lead to engine stalling as critical components are starved of lubrication.
  4. Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Actuator/Solenoid Issues: The MultiAir system uses oil pressure to operate the VVT. Low oil levels or sludge can affect these components, leading to rough idle or stalling.
  5. Spark Plug Fouling: Burning excessive oil can foul spark plugs, leading to misfires (P030x codes) and rough running, which could precede a stall.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Monitor Oil Level Religiously: Keep a very close eye on your oil level and top it off as soon as it drops. This is crucial to prevent further engine damage.
  2. Document Oil Consumption: Start an oil consumption log. Note the date, mileage, and amount of oil added. This documentation is vital if you need to pursue warranty claims or repairs.
  3. Check for DTCs: Even if the check engine light clears, a pending code might be stored. Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any stored or pending codes, especially P030x (misfire) or P0520 (oil pressure).
  4. Inspect Spark Plugs: If you're comfortable, remove and inspect the spark plugs for signs of oil fouling.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: This is a serious issue. Continuing to drive with excessive oil consumption and stalling can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Do not delay professional diagnosis.
  • Dealership First: Given the history of the 2.4L Tigershark engine, your first stop should be a Jeep dealership. They are aware of the oil consumption issues and can perform an official oil consumption test, which may qualify your vehicle for a repair under an extended warranty or a technical service bulletin (TSB).
  • If the issue is not covered by warranty, a reputable independent shop can also diagnose and repair the underlying cause, though engine repairs for this issue can be extensive.
