Vehicle: 2022 Jeep Compass Limited

I'm getting a 'Service Forward Collision Warning' message on my dash in my 2022 Jeep Compass Limited. It popped up a few days ago and hasn't gone away. The FCW system, along with adaptive cruise control, is completely disabled. I haven't been in any accidents, and the front of the car looks perfectly fine, no visible damage to the radar sensor area.

I tried cleaning the front grille area where I think the sensor is, but no luck. Is this a common sensor failure on newer Jeeps? What could be causing this, and is there anything I can do before taking it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Service Forward Collision Warning' message indicates a fault within your Jeep Compass's Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). These systems rely on complex sensors and modules, and even minor issues can trigger a warning.

Possible Causes:

  • Blocked or Dirty Sensor: While you cleaned it, sometimes even a thin layer of dirt, ice, or mud can obstruct the radar sensor (usually located in the lower grille or behind the bumper fascia) or the camera (mounted at the top of the windshield).
  • Sensor Misalignment: A slight bump or even a minor fender bender (even if not visible) can knock the radar sensor out of calibration. This requires specialized equipment to realign.
  • Faulty Radar Sensor: The sensor itself can fail internally due to manufacturing defects or environmental exposure.
  • Wiring or Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or a loose/corroded connector to the radar sensor or ADAS control module can interrupt communication.
  • Software Glitch: Less common, but a software bug in the ADAS module can cause false warnings.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Thorough Cleaning: Ensure the entire front grille area, especially where the radar sensor is, and the windshield area around the rearview mirror (where the camera is) are spotless. Use a soft cloth and glass cleaner for the camera.
  2. Check for OBD Codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for codes. ADAS issues often generate specific U-codes (e.g., U0424 - Invalid Data Received From Front Sensor Module) or C-codes related to sensor performance.
  3. Battery Disconnect: A brief battery disconnect (negative terminal for 15-30 minutes) can sometimes clear temporary module glitches. Reconnect and drive to see if the message clears.

When to See a Shop:

If the message persists after thorough cleaning and a battery reset, it's crucial to take your Compass to a dealership or a shop specializing in ADAS diagnostics. These systems are safety-critical. They have the necessary diagnostic tools to:

  • Read specific ADAS fault codes.
  • Test the radar sensor's functionality.
  • Perform sensor calibration/realignment, which is often required if a sensor is replaced or if the system detects misalignment. This cannot be done at home.
