Vehicle: 2021 Jeep Gladiator JT Sport S

My 2021 Jeep Gladiator JT Sport S has been acting really weird electrically lately. The headlights, both high and low beams, occasionally flicker, almost like they're losing power for a split second. It's not constant, but it's noticeable, especially at night.

Beyond that, I've noticed some other random electrical gremlins: the interior dome lights sometimes dim slightly, and once or twice, the radio briefly cut out. It feels like there's an underlying electrical instability. I checked the battery terminals, and they seem tight. Could this be an alternator issue, or maybe a bad ground somewhere? It's really concerning on a relatively new truck.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Random electrical gremlins like flickering lights and intermittent power to accessories on a newer vehicle like your 2021 Jeep Gladiator JT are definitely concerning. These symptoms often point to issues with the vehicle's charging system, grounding, or a specific module.

Possible Causes:

  • Failing Alternator: An alternator that's starting to fail might have intermittent output, causing voltage fluctuations that manifest as flickering lights and power dips.
  • Loose or Corroded Ground Connections: Poor ground connections are a very common cause of electrical issues. A loose ground strap can cause resistance and erratic behavior across multiple circuits.
  • Loose Battery Terminals/Cables: Even if they feel tight, corrosion under the terminals or internal breaks in the battery cables can cause intermittent power loss.
  • Faulty Battery: While newer, a battery can still develop an internal short or weak cell, leading to unstable voltage.
  • Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM controls many electrical functions, including lighting. A faulty BCM could cause erratic behavior.
  • Loose Fuse/Relay: A fuse or relay that isn't seated properly in the fuse box could cause intermittent power to its circuit.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Inspect Battery & Charging System: Have the battery load-tested and the alternator output checked under various loads. Look for voltage drops during the flickering.
  2. Check All Ground Points: Visually inspect all accessible ground straps and wires, especially those connected to the battery, engine block, chassis, and body. Ensure they are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.
  3. Inspect Fuse Boxes: Open both the under-hood and interior fuse boxes. Gently push down on all fuses and relays to ensure they are fully seated.
  4. Wiggle Test: With the engine running and lights on, gently wiggle wiring harnesses, especially those leading to the headlights and BCM, to see if you can induce or stop the flickering. This can help pinpoint a loose connection.

When to See a Shop:

If basic checks don't reveal the problem, or if you're uncomfortable diagnosing electrical issues, it's best to take your Gladiator to a qualified technician. They have specialized diagnostic tools to:

  • Monitor system voltage and amperage in real-time to catch intermittent drops.
  • Scan for specific B-codes (Body codes) related to lighting or module faults.
  • Perform advanced parasitic draw tests if a component is intermittently shorting or drawing excessive power.
