Vehicle: 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

Hey Gladiator crew,

I've got a 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon with the manual transmission, and I'm starting to experience what feels like clutch issues. It's got about 30,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a burning smell after some moderate off-roading or even just spirited driving. Also, the clutch pedal sometimes feels a bit 'mushy' or inconsistent, and I've had a couple of instances where it felt like it wasn't fully disengaging, making it hard to shift gears smoothly.

I'm aware of some past issues with manual clutches in the JL/JT platform. Is this a known problem for the 2021 models? Could it be related to a recall or TSB? I really love driving stick, but this is making me nervous about long-term reliability and potential costly repairs. No warning lights are on yet, but the smell is definitely concerning.

Any insights from other manual Gladiator owners would be great! What should I be looking for, and what's the best course of action?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your experience with clutch issues in your 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (manual transmission) is a significant concern and aligns with documented problems on the JL/JT platform. Early manual transmission models (specifically the NSG370 and later the D478) experienced issues with premature clutch wear and failure, particularly under heavy use or off-roading. There was a significant recall (20V-331) related to clutch pressure plate overheating and potential fire risk for certain 2018-2020 Wranglers and Gladiators.

  1. Recall & TSB Check: While your 2021 model might be outside the initial recall range, it's crucial to check with a Jeep dealership if your specific VIN is affected by any clutch-related recalls or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). There have been updates to clutch components and software over time to address these issues.
  2. Burning Smell: A burning smell, especially after moderate use, is a strong indicator of clutch overheating and excessive wear. This means the clutch disc is slipping excessively against the flywheel and pressure plate, generating extreme heat.
  3. Mushy/Inconsistent Pedal: This symptom can point to issues with the hydraulic clutch system (master cylinder, slave cylinder, or fluid contamination) or wear in the pressure plate/throw-out bearing. Air in the hydraulic line can also cause a soft pedal.
  4. Difficulty Shifting: If the clutch isn't fully disengaging, it makes shifting difficult or 'notchy.' This can also be a symptom of a worn clutch, hydraulic issue, or even a problem with the clutch pedal assembly itself.
  5. Potential Causes: The original design of some clutch components for the manual transmission in these heavy vehicles, especially with larger tires and off-road use, was found to be insufficient, leading to premature failure.

When to See a Shop:

IMMEDIATELY take your Gladiator to a Jeep dealership or a reputable transmission specialist. Continuing to drive with a slipping or failing clutch can lead to more extensive damage to the flywheel, pressure plate, and even the transmission input shaft. Since your vehicle is a 2021 model, it should still be under the powertrain warranty (typically 5 years/60,000 miles), which may cover clutch failure if it's determined to be a manufacturing defect rather than wear-and-tear. Be proactive and get it diagnosed quickly.
