Vehicle: 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

My 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (3.6L engine) suddenly won't start. It cranks strong, but just won't catch. The weird thing is, there's no Check Engine Light and no codes stored when I scan it with my OBD-II tool.

I was driving it fine yesterday, parked it overnight, and this morning, nothing. It's got about 30,000 miles on it.

What could cause a crank-no-start condition without any codes on a newer Jeep like this? I'm stumped!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'crank but no start' condition without any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) on your 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon indicates a fundamental issue with one of the three main components required for an engine to run: spark, fuel, or air. Since it's cranking strongly, we can generally rule out a dead battery or starter motor issues.

Here's a systematic approach to diagnose the problem:

  1. Check for Fuel:
    • Listen for Fuel Pump: Turn the ignition to the 'ON' position (don't crank) and listen for a faint hum from the rear of the vehicle for a few seconds. This is the fuel pump priming. If you don't hear it, the pump or its circuit might be faulty.
    • Fuel Pressure: If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge, connect it to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail (if present) and check for adequate pressure while cranking. Lack of pressure points to a fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel pressure regulator issue.
  2. Check for Spark:
    • Ignition System: Remove one spark plug, reconnect its ignition coil, and ground the plug's threaded part to a metal engine component. Have someone crank the engine briefly while you observe for a strong, blue spark. Use insulated pliers and extreme caution. No spark could indicate a faulty crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, ignition coil, or wiring issue.
  3. Check for Air (and related sensors):
    • Air Intake Obstruction: While less common, ensure the air intake isn't completely blocked (e.g., by debris or a shop rag).
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) / Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP): These sensors are crucial for the ECM to determine engine timing for spark and fuel injection. A failing CKP or CMP sensor can cause a no-start condition without necessarily setting a code if it's failing intermittently or not sending a signal at all. A scan tool capable of reading live data can show if these sensors are reporting RPM during cranking.
  4. Immobilizer System: Ensure your key fob battery isn't dead and that the vehicle's immobilizer system isn't preventing starting. Try a spare key if you have one.

When to see a shop:

If you've confirmed you have no spark or no fuel pressure, and especially if there are no codes, it's best to have your Gladiator towed to a qualified dealership or independent shop. Diagnosing crankshaft/camshaft position sensors, fuel pump circuits, or complex immobilizer issues often requires specialized diagnostic tools and expertise.
