Vehicle: 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, with about 85,000 miles, has recently started shifting pretty roughly, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable and getting worse. The check engine light also came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P0700 code.

I know P0700 is a generic transmission control system fault. I'm wondering if this could be related to the transmission fluid. Is 85k miles a good time to consider a fluid and filter change on these ZF 8-speed transmissions? I haven't had it done yet, and I'm hoping it's not something more serious.

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0700 code indicates a general fault within the Transmission Control System (TCS) and often means that other, more specific transmission-related codes are stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM). While it doesn't pinpoint the exact issue, it's a strong indicator that your transmission needs attention.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Check for Additional Codes: A P0700 almost always accompanies other codes. Use a more advanced OBD-II scanner that can read TCM-specific codes to get a clearer picture. These might include codes related to shift solenoids, fluid pressure, or sensor malfunctions.
  2. Transmission Fluid Service: For the ZF 8HP transmission in your 2018 Grand Cherokee, the manufacturer (ZF) recommends a fluid and filter change between 75,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 8 years, under normal driving conditions. If you do a lot of towing, heavy off-roading, or stop-and-go city driving, these intervals should be shorter. Using the correct fluid (typically ZF LifeguardFluid 8 or an equivalent spec) and a genuine ZF filter kit is crucial. Incorrect fluid can cause significant issues.
  3. Causes of Rough Shifting: Besides old fluid, rough shifting can be caused by:
    • Low transmission fluid level (check carefully, as this is a sealed system and requires specific procedures).
    • Worn or faulty shift solenoids.
    • Issues with the valve body.
    • Internal transmission wear.
    • Software glitches in the TCM (sometimes a reflash can help).

When to See a Shop:

If a transmission fluid and filter change (using the correct parts and procedure) doesn't resolve the rough shifting and the P0700 code, or if you find additional specific transmission codes, it's time to visit a qualified transmission specialist. They have the diagnostic tools and expertise to properly diagnose internal transmission issues, perform advanced diagnostics, and potentially rebuild or replace components. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly transmission damage.
