Vehicle: 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

Hey everyone,

I've got a weird issue with my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The Uconnect infotainment screen has started freezing up randomly, and sometimes it just goes completely black for a few minutes before rebooting itself. It's really annoying, especially when I'm using navigation or the backup camera.

It seems to happen more often on longer drives, but it's not consistent. Sometimes it works perfectly fine for days, then acts up multiple times in an hour. I've tried doing a soft reset (holding down the volume and tune buttons), but that only helps temporarily, if at all.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Grand Cherokee? Is this a known issue, and what might be causing it? I'm worried it's a bigger electrical problem.

This is a fairly common complaint for Uconnect systems, especially in the 2018-2020 model years. The intermittent freezing and black screen issues often point to a problem within the Uconnect head unit itself or related electrical components.

Here's what you can investigate:

  1. Software Update: The first step is always to check if your Uconnect system has the latest software. Outdated firmware can cause various glitches. You can often check for updates via the Uconnect system settings or on the official Jeep Uconnect website by entering your VIN.
  2. Hard Reset: While you've tried a soft reset, a more thorough hard reset can sometimes clear temporary electrical gremlins. This involves disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 15-30 minutes, then reconnecting it. Be aware this might reset other vehicle settings.
  3. Check for Loose Connections: Although less likely for an intermittent issue, a loose electrical connection to the head unit could cause power interruptions. This usually requires removing dashboard trim to access the unit.
  4. Module Failure: The Uconnect head unit is essentially a computer. Over time, internal components can fail, leading to these symptoms. Heat can exacerbate these issues, explaining why it might be worse on longer drives.
  5. CAN Bus Issues: Less common, but a fault in the Controller Area Network (CAN bus) communication system could cause the head unit to lose connection or receive corrupted data, leading to freezes. This would typically trigger other warning lights or system malfunctions.

When to See a Shop:

  • If software updates and battery resets don't resolve the issue.
  • If the problem becomes more frequent or severe, impacting critical functions like the backup camera.
  • If you notice any other electrical anomalies in the vehicle.

A dealership or a specialized automotive electronics shop can perform advanced diagnostics, potentially identifying fault codes (even if no check engine light is on, internal module codes can exist) and determining if the head unit needs repair or replacement. They can also check power and ground connections more thoroughly.
