Vehicle: 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland

Hello fellow Jeep owners,

I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior in my 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland, equipped with the 5.7L Hemi engine and the 8-speed automatic. It has about 40,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a distinct hesitation when accelerating from a stop, almost like it's searching for the right gear. Also, some of the shifts, particularly from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, feel quite harsh and clunky.

There's no check engine light on, but the feeling is definitely not normal. I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger problem with the ZF 8HP transmission. Has anyone else with a newer Grand Cherokee L experienced similar issues? What was the resolution?

Thanks for any insights!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission hesitation and hard shifts in a relatively new vehicle like your 2021 Grand Cherokee L can be concerning, especially with the ZF 8HP transmission, which is generally known for its smooth operation.

Potential Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Software/Firmware Update: The most common cause for these symptoms in modern transmissions, especially without a check engine light, is often a need for a Transmission Control Module (TCM) software update. Manufacturers frequently release updates to refine shift logic and address minor glitches. This should be the first thing a dealership investigates.
  2. Adaptive Learning: Modern transmissions have adaptive learning capabilities. Sometimes, aggressive driving styles or recent battery disconnections can cause the transmission to 'forget' its optimal shift points, leading to temporary rough shifting. Driving normally for a while can sometimes help it re-learn, or a dealership can perform a 'quick learn' procedure.
  3. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: While less likely in a 2021 model with 40k miles, especially if it hasn't been serviced, low or contaminated transmission fluid can cause shifting issues. The ZF 8HP is a sealed unit, but leaks can occur. A professional can check the fluid level and condition.
  4. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is responsible for directing fluid to engage clutches and bands. A faulty valve body or solenoids within it can cause erratic shifting. This is a more complex repair.
  5. Internal Transmission Wear: While rare at 40k miles, internal wear or damage to clutches or gears could cause these symptoms. This would typically be accompanied by more severe symptoms or diagnostic trouble codes.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Since there's no check engine light, your best first step is to visit a Jeep dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for pending codes, perform software updates, and conduct specific transmission diagnostic tests. Explain the symptoms clearly.
  • If the issue worsens, or if you notice any new noises, burning smells, or a check engine light illuminates, stop driving and have it towed to prevent further damage.
