Vehicle: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone here has experienced this and can offer some advice. My 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, with the 3.6L V6 and 8-speed automatic, has been acting really strange lately. It feels like it's hesitating when accelerating from a stop, and the shifts, especially from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, are pretty harsh and clunky.

Sometimes it feels like it's searching for a gear, and a couple of times I've even seen a 'Service Shifter' message pop up on the dash, though it usually goes away after restarting the car. I'm worried about potential transmission issues. The mileage is around 75,000.

Has anyone else had similar problems with their Grand Cherokee? Is this a known issue with these transmissions? What should I be looking for or asking my mechanic to check?

It sounds like your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is exhibiting common symptoms associated with the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, which can be found in many FCA vehicles. These issues often stem from software calibration or, in some cases, internal component wear.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Software Updates: The most common fix for rough shifting and hesitation is a transmission control module (TCM) software update. Jeep has released several updates over the years to refine shift logic and address these very concerns. This is usually the first step a dealership will take.
  2. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: While these transmissions are often considered 'sealed for life,' fluid levels can still be critical. An incorrect fluid level or degraded fluid can lead to shifting problems. A qualified technician should check this, as it requires specific procedures and tools.
  3. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is responsible for directing transmission fluid to engage different gears. Over time, solenoids within the valve body can wear or become sticky, leading to erratic shifting. This is a more involved repair but not uncommon.
  4. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even if the 'Service Shifter' message disappears, there might be stored codes. Common codes related to transmission issues include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0729 (Gear 6 Incorrect Ratio), P0730 (Incorrect Gear Ratio), or specific codes related to solenoid performance.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the 'Service Shifter' message becomes persistent, if you experience a complete loss of a gear, or if the vehicle enters 'limp mode' (restricted speed/gears).
  • Soon: Given the symptoms, it's advisable to have a certified Jeep technician or a reputable transmission specialist diagnose the issue as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with significant transmission problems can lead to more severe and costly damage.

Request that the shop checks for any available TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) related to your specific model year and transmission, as well as performing a full diagnostic scan for codes and checking for the latest TCM software calibration.
