Vehicle: 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland

My 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland is having persistent issues with the Uconnect 5 system. It frequently freezes, especially when using Apple CarPlay, and sometimes the screen just goes completely blank for a few seconds before restarting. It's incredibly frustrating, especially on longer drives.

I've tried soft resets by holding down the power button, but the problem always comes back. I've also made sure my iPhone is updated. Is this a known bug with Uconnect 5, or could it be a hardware issue? I bought the car new, so it's still under warranty.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Grand Cherokee L or other newer Jeeps with Uconnect 5? What was the solution? I'm debating whether to take it to the dealer, but I'd like to go in armed with some information.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Uconnect 5 is a powerful system, but like any complex software, it can experience glitches. Your issues with freezing, blank screens, and CarPlay problems on your 2021 Grand Cherokee L are not uncommon. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Software Updates: The most frequent cause of Uconnect issues is outdated software. Jeep regularly releases over-the-air (OTA) updates or dealer-installed updates to address bugs and improve stability. Your dealer can check if your system has the latest firmware. This is often the first and easiest fix.
  2. Hard Reset/Factory Reset: While you've done soft resets, a full factory reset (usually found in the Uconnect settings menu under 'System' or 'Restore') can sometimes clear persistent software conflicts. Be aware this will erase personal settings and paired devices.
  3. Phone/Cable Issues: For CarPlay specifically, ensure you're using a high-quality, Apple-certified USB cable if connecting wired. Also, try another iPhone or device to rule out your phone as the source of the problem.
  4. Module Glitch: The Uconnect system is controlled by a dedicated module. Occasionally, this module can experience internal errors. A dealer can diagnose this using their specialized tools.
  5. Antenna/Connectivity: While less likely for freezing, poor cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity (if enabled) can sometimes contribute to system slowdowns or errors.

When to See a Shop:

  • Now: Since your vehicle is still under warranty, it's highly recommended to take it to a Jeep dealership. They have the diagnostic tools and access to the latest software updates and Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) specifically for Uconnect 5. Document the issues thoroughly (dates, times, specific actions that trigger the freeze) to help the technician. This is a warranty repair, so there should be no cost to you.
