Vehicle: 2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude

Hello Jeep community,

I'm having some really bizarre electrical problems with my 2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude (2.4L engine). It started a few weeks ago, and it's getting worse. Random warning lights will flash on the dash – sometimes the ABS light, sometimes the traction control, sometimes even the 'Service Engine' light, but they usually disappear after a few seconds or after restarting the car. There's no pattern to it.

Even stranger, the wipers will occasionally activate on their own for a single swipe, even when it's not raining and the stalk is off. The power windows also act up sometimes, taking multiple presses to go down or up. I've checked the battery terminals, and they seem clean and tight. Could this be a bad ground somewhere, or a failing body control module (BCM)? It feels like the car is possessed!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Random, intermittent electrical issues like flashing warning lights, self-activating wipers, and erratic power windows in a 2016 Jeep Renegade are often indicative of a communication network problem, a faulty ground, or a failing control module, such as the Body Control Module (BCM).

Here's a structured approach to diagnosing these 'electrical gremlins':

  1. Battery and Charging System Check:

    • Voltage Drop Test: Even if terminals are clean, a weak battery or poor connection can cause voltage fluctuations that confuse modules. Have the battery load-tested and the alternator output checked. Low voltage can trigger false warnings.
    • Ground Points: Inspect all major ground points, especially those connected to the battery, engine, and chassis. Corrosion or looseness at these points can cause widespread electrical issues. Common ground points are often found near the battery, under the hood, and sometimes under the dash.
  2. OBD-II Scan (Advanced):

    • A standard OBD-II scanner might only show powertrain codes. For these types of issues, you need a scanner that can access all vehicle modules (ABS, BCM, TCM, etc.).
    • Look for U-codes: These are network communication codes (e.g., U0401 - Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM, U0100 - Lost Communication with ECM/PCM). These codes indicate that modules are having trouble talking to each other, which can cause erratic behavior.
  3. Body Control Module (BCM):

    • The BCM controls many of the functions you're describing (wipers, windows, interior lights, some warning lights). If the BCM itself is failing or receiving corrupted data, it can manifest as these seemingly random issues.
    • Water Intrusion: Check for any signs of water intrusion around the BCM (often located under the dash or behind the glove box), as water damage can severely impact its function.

When to See a Shop: Given the widespread and intermittent nature of these problems, it's highly recommended to take your Renegade to a qualified mechanic or a Jeep dealership. Diagnosing communication network issues and BCM failures requires specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise. They can perform a comprehensive scan of all modules, check for software updates, and accurately pinpoint the root cause, whether it's a faulty ground, a wiring harness issue, or a failing control module. Attempting to fix these without proper tools can be frustrating and potentially lead to further complications.
