Vehicle: 2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4L

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit concerned about my 2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude with the 2.4L MultiAir engine. I've noticed that I'm having to add a quart of oil every 1,000-1,500 miles, which seems excessive. There are no visible leaks under the car, and I don't see any blue smoke coming from the exhaust, except maybe a tiny puff on a cold start sometimes.

I've heard that the 2.4L 'Tigershark' engine in these models might have a known issue with oil consumption. Is this true? What should I be looking for, and what are my options? My car has about 75,000 miles on it now.

Any advice on how to approach this with a mechanic or dealership would be really helpful. Thanks for your input!

Your concerns about excessive oil consumption in your 2016 Jeep Renegade with the 2.4L MultiAir (Tigershark) engine are unfortunately well-founded. This engine is known for a design flaw related to its piston rings, which can lead to oil burning.

  1. The Problem:

    • Piston Ring Design: The original piston ring design in certain production runs of the 2.4L engine was prone to allowing oil to bypass into the combustion chamber, where it is then burned off. This results in the need to frequently add oil between changes.
    • TSBs and Extended Warranty: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA, now Stellantis) issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and, in some cases, extended the warranty for affected vehicles to address this issue. The common fix involves replacing the piston rings with an updated design, or in severe cases, engine replacement.
  2. What to Do:

    • Oil Consumption Test: The first step is to have an official oil consumption test performed by a Jeep dealership. This involves topping off your oil, sealing the dipstick and oil cap, and having you return after a specified mileage (e.g., 1,000 miles) to measure the consumption. This provides documented proof of the issue.
    • Check for TSBs/Warranty: Provide your VIN to the dealership. They can check for any active TSBs (like TSB 09-001-17 REV. C or similar) or extended warranty coverage related to excessive oil consumption for your specific vehicle.
    • Document Everything: Keep meticulous records of when you add oil, how much, and your mileage. This will be crucial if you need to pursue a warranty claim.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Schedule an appointment with a Jeep dealership to initiate the oil consumption test. Even if you're out of the standard powertrain warranty, the extended warranty for this specific issue might still apply (often 7 years/100,000 miles or more, depending on the specific program).
    • Professional Repair: This is not a DIY fix. The repair involves significant engine work (piston ring replacement or engine swap) and must be done by qualified technicians. Ignoring the problem can lead to engine damage from low oil levels, even if you're regularly topping it off.
