Vehicle: 2017 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really annoying problem with my 2017 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. The Uconnect system (5.0-inch screen) keeps freezing up, sometimes mid-navigation or while I'm on a call. It becomes completely unresponsive, and the only way to fix it is to turn off the car, open the door, and restart it. This happens almost daily now.

On top of that, I've noticed some other minor electrical glitches – sometimes the interior lights flicker, or the remote start fails to work on the first try. It feels like there's an underlying electrical issue, but I don't have any warning lights on the dash. My battery was replaced about a year ago, so I don't think it's that.

Has anyone with a 2017 Renegade experienced these Uconnect or general electrical problems? Is there a known fix or a software update I might be missing? This is making my commute quite frustrating. Any advice is appreciated!

Uconnect freezing and general electrical glitches are not uncommon complaints for various Stellantis vehicles, including the 2017 Jeep Renegade. These issues can stem from several sources, from simple software bugs to more complex wiring or component failures.

  1. Uconnect Software Update: The most frequent solution for Uconnect freezing or unresponsiveness is a software update for the head unit. Manufacturers often release updates to fix bugs, improve stability, and add features. A dealership can check your VIN for available updates and perform the installation.
  2. Hard Reset: Sometimes, a simple hard reset of the Uconnect system can resolve temporary glitches. This can often be done by holding down specific buttons (e.g., volume and tuner knobs simultaneously for 10-20 seconds) or by disconnecting the vehicle's battery for 15-30 minutes (though this can reset other systems).
  3. Battery & Charging System: Even if your battery was replaced, ensure the charging system (alternator, voltage regulator) is functioning correctly. Low or fluctuating voltage can cause erratic electrical behavior. A parasitic draw could also be slowly draining your battery, leading to low voltage issues over time, even if the battery itself is good. OBD codes like B156D (Battery Voltage Low) or U0140 (Lost Communication with Body Control Module) might appear if voltage is unstable.
  4. Grounding Issues: Loose or corroded ground wires can cause a multitude of seemingly unrelated electrical problems. A thorough inspection of common ground points is advisable.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM): The BCM controls many electrical functions. A faulty BCM could manifest as various electrical gremlins, though this is a less common and more expensive repair.

When to See a Shop:

If a Uconnect software update or a hard reset doesn't resolve the issue, or if the electrical glitches become more frequent or severe, you should take your Renegade to a qualified technician or a Jeep dealership. They can perform a diagnostic scan (even without a Check Engine Light, other modules may store codes) and test the electrical system thoroughly to pinpoint the cause. Persistent issues could indicate a more serious problem that requires professional diagnosis.
