Vehicle: 2018 Jeep Renegade Latitude

Hey everyone, I've got a problem with my 2018 Jeep Renegade Latitude, 1.4L MultiAir Turbo engine. Recently, I've noticed a significant loss of power, especially when accelerating onto the highway. It feels like the turbo isn't kicking in properly.

The Check Engine Light came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P0299 code, which is 'Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost'. I also started hearing a distinct whining noise from the engine bay, which seems to get louder under acceleration.

My Renegade has about 70,000 miles on it. Has anyone else experienced this P0299 code or a whining noise with their 1.4L turbo? What was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0299 'Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost' code combined with a whining noise and loss of power on your 2018 Jeep Renegade 1.4L MultiAir Turbo strongly points to an issue within the turbocharger system. This is a common problem area for forced induction engines as components wear over time.

Common Causes for P0299 and Whining:

  1. Turbocharger Failure: The most direct cause. The whining noise is often indicative of failing bearings within the turbocharger itself. As the bearings wear, the compressor or turbine wheels can rub against the housing, creating the noise and leading to inefficient boost production.
  2. Boost Leak: A crack or loose connection in the intercooler piping, charge air cooler, or vacuum lines can allow boost pressure to escape, resulting in underboost. While this might not always cause a distinct whine, a significant leak could.
  3. Wastegate Actuator Malfunction: The wastegate controls exhaust gas flow to the turbine. If the actuator (which can be vacuum or electronically controlled) is stuck open or faulty, too much exhaust gas bypasses the turbine, preventing proper boost generation.
  4. Diverter Valve/Bypass Valve Failure: This valve releases excess boost pressure when the throttle closes. If it's stuck open or leaking, boost pressure can escape, leading to underboost.
  5. Clogged Catalytic Converter: While less common for P0299, a severely restricted exhaust can create back pressure that hinders turbocharger operation.

What to Do:

  1. Professional Diagnosis: Given the whining noise and P0299, it's highly recommended to have a mechanic specializing in turbo systems or a Jeep dealership perform a thorough diagnosis. They can inspect the turbocharger for shaft play, check all boost hoses for leaks, and test the wastegate and diverter valve.
  2. Avoid Hard Driving: Continued driving with a failing turbo can lead to more severe engine damage, such as metal fragments entering the engine or further compromising the exhaust system.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: The combination of a P0299 code, loss of power, and a distinct whining noise suggests a failing turbocharger. This is not a repair to delay, as a complete turbo failure can be more costly and potentially damage other engine components.
