Vehicle: 2018 Jeep Renegade Latitude

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Jeep Renegade Latitude with the 2.4L Tigershark engine has been acting up. While driving, the 'Service Electronic Throttle Control' light came on, along with the check engine light, and the car immediately went into limp mode. It felt like it lost all power, and I could barely get it to the side of the road. After turning it off and on, the light sometimes clears, but it comes back quickly.

I managed to pull a code: P2118. This is really frustrating, especially since the car only has 60,000 miles. Has anyone else experienced this with their Renegade or Compass? What was the fix? I'm hoping it's not a super expensive repair.

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Service Electronic Throttle Control' light, limp mode, and the P2118 code (Throttle Actuator Control Motor Current Range/Performance) are classic symptoms of an issue with the electronic throttle body in your 2018 Jeep Renegade 2.4L Tigershark engine.

Common Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Faulty Electronic Throttle Body (ETB): This is the most common cause. The ETB contains a motor and sensors that control the throttle plate. Over time, these components can fail, leading to erratic throttle response, limp mode, and the P2118 code. Internal wear or carbon buildup can also affect its operation.
  2. Wiring or Connector Issues: Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the throttle body. Frayed wires, corrosion, or a loose connection can interrupt the signal to the ETB, causing it to malfunction. This is a good first visual check.
  3. PCM (Powertrain Control Module) Glitch: Less common, but sometimes a software glitch in the PCM can cause incorrect signals to be sent to the throttle body. A PCM reflash or update might be necessary, though usually, the ETB itself is the culprit.
  4. Vacuum Leaks: While not directly causing a P2118, severe vacuum leaks can sometimes indirectly affect engine performance and confuse the PCM, though this code points more directly to the throttle body.

What You Can Do & When to See a Shop:

  • Inspect Wiring: Visually check the wiring and connector at the throttle body for any obvious damage or looseness. Disconnect and reconnect the connector to ensure a good connection.
  • Clean Throttle Body: Sometimes, carbon buildup around the throttle plate can impede its movement. You can try carefully cleaning the throttle body with a specialized throttle body cleaner (not carburetor cleaner). Disconnect the battery before cleaning and follow product instructions. Be gentle with the throttle plate.
  • Professional Diagnosis: If cleaning and checking connections don't resolve the issue, it's highly likely the electronic throttle body itself needs replacement. This is a job best left to a professional shop or dealership. They can confirm the diagnosis, replace the part, and perform any necessary relearn procedures for the new throttle body.
  • Don't Ignore: Driving in limp mode is not recommended. The vehicle's performance is severely limited, and it could be unsafe. Address this issue promptly to restore full functionality and safety.
