Vehicle: 2022 Jeep Renegade Latitude

Hey everyone,

I just got a 2022 Jeep Renegade Latitude with the 1.3L turbo engine, and I'm wondering about the best practices for oil changes. The dealership said 10,000 miles, but that seems a bit long to me, especially for a turbo engine.

What are you guys running for oil change intervals? And what kind of oil and filter do you recommend? I want to keep this engine running strong for a long time. Any specific brands for synthetic oil or filters that are better than others?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Congratulations on your new 2022 Jeep Renegade Latitude with the 1.3L turbo engine! Proper oil maintenance is key to the longevity of any engine, especially a turbocharged one. While modern engines and synthetic oils allow for longer intervals, it's wise to understand the nuances.

Here's a guide for your Renegade:

  1. Oil Type: Your 1.3L turbo engine requires SAE 0W-30 full synthetic engine oil that meets the API SN PLUS or SP classification and the Chrysler MS-13340 specification. Using oil that doesn't meet these specific requirements can lead to issues like Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), which is particularly relevant for small displacement, direct-injected turbocharged engines.
  2. Oil Change Interval: The 10,000-mile or 1-year interval (whichever comes first) recommended by the dealership is often for 'normal' driving conditions. However, many factors can classify your driving as 'severe duty,' which warrants more frequent changes.
    • Severe Duty Conditions: These include frequent short trips, extensive idling, towing, driving in dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, or aggressive driving. If any of these apply to you, consider changing your oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
    • Normal Duty: If your driving is primarily highway cruising with minimal stop-and-go, the 10,000-mile interval might be acceptable, but always monitor your oil life monitor if your vehicle has one.
  3. Oil Filter: Always use a high-quality oil filter. OEM Mopar filters are designed specifically for your engine. Reputable aftermarket brands like Wix, PurolatorONE, Mobil 1, or K&N also offer excellent filtration. Avoid generic or low-cost filters that may not meet the necessary filtration standards or burst pressure ratings for your engine.
  4. DIY or Shop: An oil change on the 1.3L Renegade is a straightforward DIY task for most. You'll need the correct socket for the drain plug and an oil filter wrench (often a cap-style wrench for the canister filter). Ensure you have a torque wrench for the drain plug to prevent overtightening.
  5. Importance for Turbo Engines: Turbochargers operate at extremely high temperatures and RPMs. Clean, high-quality synthetic oil is essential for cooling and lubricating the turbo's bearings. Neglecting oil changes or using incorrect oil can lead to premature turbo failure, sludge buildup, and reduced engine life. There are no direct OBD codes for oil quality, but prolonged neglect can lead to codes like P0016 (Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation) due to VVT issues from sludge, or even misfire codes if engine health deteriorates.
