Vehicle: 2016 Kia Optima EX

Hey everyone, I'm really worried about my 2016 Kia Optima EX. Recently, I've noticed a distinct knocking sound coming from the engine, especially when accelerating. The check engine light also came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P1326 code.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Optima? What could be causing it? The car has about 90,000 miles on it.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P1326 code for your 2016 Kia Optima EX, combined with an engine knocking sound, is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. This code specifically indicates an issue with the engine knocking sensor system, often triggered by abnormal engine vibrations or actual pre-ignition/detonation.

Common Causes:

  1. Engine Bearing Failure: This is a serious concern, particularly with certain Kia/Hyundai GDI engines from this era, where connecting rod bearing wear can lead to severe engine damage.
  2. Knock Sensor Malfunction: Less common, but a faulty knock sensor itself could send incorrect signals.
  3. Oil Sludge/Low Oil Pressure: Inadequate lubrication can exacerbate bearing wear.

What to Do:

  1. Stop Driving Immediately: Continuing to drive with an active P1326 code and engine knocking can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
  2. Check Oil Level and Condition: Ensure your oil is at the proper level and doesn't look excessively dark or sludgy.
  3. Professional Diagnosis: This issue almost always requires a professional diagnosis. A qualified technician will use specialized equipment to listen to the engine, perform oil pressure tests, and potentially use a borescope to inspect cylinders.
  4. Warranty Check: If your vehicle falls within the extended warranty for engine issues (often 10 years/120,000 miles for specific GDI engines), ensure you bring it to a Kia dealership for inspection.

When to See a Shop: Immediately. Do not delay. This is not a DIY fix and can lead to a complete engine replacement if ignored. Have your vehicle towed to a reputable service center or Kia dealership as soon as possible.
