2020 Forte GT-Line: TPMS Light On Constantly After Tire Rotation

Vehicle: 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on my 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line. About a month ago, I had my tires rotated at a local shop. Ever since then, the TPMS warning light has been on constantly. I've checked all four tire pressures multiple times with a reliable gauge, and they are all perfectly at 33 PSI, which is the recommended pressure.

I've tried driving it for a while, thinking it might reset, but no luck. Is there a manual reset procedure I'm missing, or could one of the sensors have been damaged during the rotation? It's really annoying having that light on all the time.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's common for the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) light to illuminate after a tire rotation, especially if the system isn't properly recalibrated or if a sensor was affected. For your 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line, the system usually self-learns, but sometimes issues arise.

Possible Causes for Persistent TPMS Light:

  1. Sensor Battery Failure: TPMS sensors have internal batteries that typically last 5-10 years. While your car is relatively new, a sensor could have an early failure.
  2. Damaged Sensor: During tire rotation or mounting, a sensor can be accidentally damaged, causing it to stop transmitting.
  3. TPMS Module Issue: Less common, but the TPMS control module itself could be faulty, failing to receive or process sensor signals.
  4. Incorrect Recalibration: Although many Kia models self-learn, sometimes a specific reset procedure or a scan tool is needed, especially if the system is confused by the new tire positions.

When to See a Shop:

Since you've already verified tire pressures, the next step is to have a professional diagnose the system. A tire shop or Kia dealership can use a specialized TPMS scan tool to:

  • Read the individual sensor IDs and their battery status.
  • Determine which specific sensor (if any) is not transmitting.
  • Perform a manual relearn procedure if necessary.
  • Check for any related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the TPMS module.

Potential OBD Codes (specific to TPMS):

  • C1312: Front Left Tire Pressure Sensor Malfunction
  • C1313: Front Right Tire Pressure Sensor Malfunction
  • C1314: Rear Right Tire Pressure Sensor Malfunction
  • C1315: Rear Left Tire Pressure Sensor Malfunction
  • C1316: TPMS Sensor ID Not Registered
  • C1317: TPMS System Malfunction

These codes indicate a direct issue with a sensor or the system. Ignoring the TPMS light can be dangerous as it's a safety feature designed to alert you to potentially unsafe tire conditions.
