Vehicle: 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line

Hi all,

I'm having some weird issues with my 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line, which has the IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission). Lately, it's been hesitating quite a bit when I accelerate from a stop, almost like it's struggling to find the right 'gear' ratio. It's not a smooth takeoff anymore.

On top of that, I've started hearing a faint whining noise, especially at lower speeds or when the engine is under a bit more load. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission area. I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger problem with the IVT.

Has anyone else with a 2019-2022 Forte experienced similar transmission behavior? What was the fix, or what should I be looking into? Any help would be appreciated!

Your description of hesitation and a whining noise in your 2020 Kia Forte's IVT transmission points to potential issues that should be investigated by a professional. While IVTs are designed for smooth operation, these symptoms can indicate internal problems.

Possible Causes:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Incorrect fluid levels or degraded fluid can lead to poor performance, overheating, and noise. IVT fluid is specific and not interchangeable with traditional automatic transmission fluid.
  2. Internal IVT Component Wear: The belt or pulleys within the IVT can wear over time, leading to slipping, hesitation, and whining noises as they struggle to maintain proper tension or ratio.
  3. Valve Body or Solenoid Issues: Problems with the transmission's valve body or solenoids can disrupt fluid pressure and flow, affecting ratio changes and overall performance.
  4. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Malfunction: A faulty TCM could be sending incorrect signals, leading to erratic shifting behavior.

Common OBD Codes (if check engine light is on):

  • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (generic code, indicates a transmission fault)
  • P0717: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
  • P0741: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly: If the hesitation worsens, the whining becomes louder, or if your check engine light illuminates, it's crucial to have the vehicle inspected. Continued driving with these symptoms can cause further damage.
  • Diagnostic Steps a Shop Will Take:
    1. Scan for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the TCM.
    2. Check the IVT fluid level and condition. They will use the correct Kia-specific IVT fluid.
    3. Perform a road test to observe transmission behavior under various conditions.
    4. Inspect for external leaks or damage to the transmission.
    5. If necessary, they may perform internal diagnostics or recommend transmission service/replacement based on findings.
