2020 Kia Forte GT - ABS and Traction Control lights on intermittently

Vehicle: 2020 Kia Forte GT

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my 2020 Kia Forte GT. For the past few weeks, the ABS and Traction Control warning lights have been coming on intermittently. Sometimes they'll stay on for a whole drive, other times they'll flicker on and off, or not appear at all.

It seems to happen more often when I'm driving over bumps or uneven roads, but not always. I haven't noticed any change in braking performance, but it's still concerning. I've checked the brake fluid, and it's at the correct level.

Could this be a wheel speed sensor issue? Or something more serious? Any advice on what to check or what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent ABS and Traction Control warning lights on your 2020 Kia Forte GT are a common concern and typically point to an issue within the vehicle's braking or stability control system. While braking performance might seem normal, these systems are crucial for safety, especially in emergency maneuvers.

Possible Causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or has a faulty wiring harness, it can send incorrect signals to the ABS control module, triggering the warning lights. The intermittent nature often suggests a loose connection or a sensor that's just starting to fail.
  2. Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: These rings (also called tone rings) are typically found on the axle or wheel hub and work with the wheel speed sensors. If a ring is cracked, corroded, or has debris, it can disrupt the sensor's reading.
  3. Low Brake Fluid Level: While you've checked this, it's a common cause for the brake warning light, which can sometimes be linked to ABS/Traction Control warnings.
  4. ABS Control Module Failure: Less common, but a faulty ABS module itself can cause these lights to illuminate. This is usually accompanied by more consistent and severe symptoms.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring leading to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can cause intermittent signals.

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The first step is to connect an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS codes. Common codes related to wheel speed sensors include C1200 (Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction) or specific codes like C1201-C1204 for individual wheel sensors.
  2. Visual Inspection of Wheel Speed Sensors and Wiring:
    • Safely lift the vehicle and remove the wheels.
    • Inspect each wheel speed sensor for physical damage, dirt, or debris.
    • Check the wiring harnesses leading to the sensors for fraying, cuts, or corrosion.
  3. Inspect Reluctor Rings: While the wheels are off, visually inspect the reluctor rings for cracks, missing teeth, or excessive rust.
  4. Check Brake Fluid Level and Condition: Ensure it's at the MAX line and the fluid isn't excessively dark or contaminated.

When to See a Shop:

If you retrieve an ABS code, especially one pointing to a specific wheel speed sensor, and you're comfortable replacing it, you might attempt a DIY repair. However, if the issue persists, if you cannot read ABS-specific codes, or if you suspect a more complex problem like a faulty ABS module or wiring harness, it's highly recommended to take your 2020 Kia Forte GT to a professional mechanic. They have advanced diagnostic tools to monitor live sensor data and accurately pinpoint the exact cause of the intermittent warnings, ensuring your safety systems are fully functional.
