Vehicle: 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line IVT

Hi all, I'm having some concerns with the transmission in my 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line, which has the IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission). Lately, it's been feeling really rough, especially when shifting from a stop or at lower speeds. It feels like it's hesitating before engaging, and sometimes there's a noticeable jerk.

I bought this car new, and it only has about 45,000 miles on it. I thought IVTs were supposed to be smooth. Is this normal behavior for these transmissions, or should I be worried? I've heard some mixed things about IVTs/CVTs in general.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with their Forte or other Kia models with the IVT? What was the fix, if any? I'm trying to decide if this is something I need to take to the dealer right away or if it's just a characteristic of the transmission.

It's concerning to hear about rough shifting and hesitation in your 2020 Kia Forte GT-Line's IVT. While IVTs are designed for smooth operation, some owners have reported similar issues, especially in earlier iterations or under specific driving conditions.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and actions:

  1. Transmission Fluid Level/Condition: The first step is to check the transmission fluid. Low or degraded fluid can cause shifting problems. While many IVTs are considered 'sealed for life,' checking and potentially replacing the fluid at recommended intervals (or sooner if issues arise) can sometimes resolve minor problems. Ensure the correct fluid type is used.
  2. Software Updates: Kia often releases software updates for transmission control modules (TCMs) to improve shifting logic, address minor glitches, and enhance overall performance. A dealership can check if there are any applicable updates for your vehicle's VIN.
  3. IVT Belt/Pulley Wear: In some cases, internal wear within the IVT's belt or pulley system can lead to hesitation or rough engagement. This is a more serious mechanical issue.
  4. Sensor Malfunction: Sensors like the input/output speed sensors or throttle position sensor can send incorrect data to the TCM, leading to improper shifting. This might trigger a Check Engine Light with codes such as P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific speed sensor codes (e.g., P0715, P0720).
  5. When to See a Shop: You should take your Forte to a Kia dealership or a transmission specialist as soon as possible. Ignoring transmission issues can lead to more severe and costly damage. Describe the symptoms precisely, including when they occur (cold, hot, specific speeds). Request them to check for TSBs related to IVT performance and to scan for any stored diagnostic trouble codes, even if the Check Engine Light isn't on. Since your vehicle is relatively new, it should still be under the powertrain warranty, making prompt diagnosis crucial.
