Vehicle: 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line with the 8-speed DCT, and it's only got about 30,000 miles on it. For the past few weeks, I've noticed some really strange transmission behavior. It often hesitates significantly when I try to accelerate from a stop or at low speeds, almost like it's struggling to find the right gear.

Sometimes, the shifts feel really rough, especially between 1st and 2nd gear, or 2nd and 3rd. It's not smooth at all, and it makes the driving experience pretty unpleasant. I'm concerned this could be a major issue with the dual-clutch transmission.

Has anyone else with a K5 or another Kia with the 8-speed DCT experienced this? Is there a known fix or a TSB for this kind of problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line's symptoms of hesitation and rough shifting, particularly with the 8-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT), are concerning and warrant immediate attention. DCTs can sometimes exhibit unique characteristics, but persistent rough shifts and hesitation are not normal.

  1. DCT Characteristics vs. Malfunction: While DCTs can sometimes feel different from traditional automatics (e.g., slight lurching at very low speeds), consistent hesitation and harsh shifts indicate a potential problem. This could be related to the transmission control module (TCM) software, clutch pack wear, or other internal components.

  2. Common DTCs: If the issue is severe enough, it might trigger a check engine light or transmission warning light. Potential diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) could include:

    • P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction): A generic code indicating a fault in the transmission system.
    • P0731 (Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio) or similar codes for other gears: Indicates a problem with gear engagement.
    • P0841 (Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch 'A' Circuit Range/Performance): Could point to pressure issues.
  3. Check for TSBs/Software Updates: Kia has released software updates for various transmission issues in their vehicles. A dealership can check if there are any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software recalibrations for your specific K5 model and transmission that might address these symptoms.

  4. Driving Habits: While unlikely to be the sole cause, ensure your driving habits are conducive to DCT longevity. Avoid excessive creeping in traffic or rapid, repeated acceleration/deceleration, which can put extra strain on the clutch packs.

When to See a Shop: You should take your K5 to a Kia dealership as soon as possible. Since your vehicle is still relatively new and likely under the factory powertrain warranty (5-year/60,000-mile basic, 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain), any necessary repairs should be covered. Describe the symptoms in detail, noting when they occur (e.g., cold start, specific speeds, specific gears).
