Vehicle: 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line (1.6T)

Hello everyone,

I'm having some trouble with my 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line, which has about 40,000 miles on it. Recently, the check engine light came on, and the car started running really rough, especially at idle. It feels like it's misfiring pretty consistently. I pulled the code with my OBD scanner, and it's showing P0301, which indicates a misfire in cylinder 1.

Given the mileage, I'm wondering if it's time for spark plugs, or if it could be an ignition coil issue. I know these newer engines can be sensitive. Is there a way to diagnose if it's the plug or the coil without just replacing both? What's the recommended spark plug change interval for the K5 1.6T engine? Any specific brand recommendations for plugs or coils if I need to replace them?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A P0301 code on your 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line (1.6T) at 40,000 miles, accompanied by a rough idle and misfire, points directly to an issue in cylinder 1. This is a very common problem that can be caused by either a faulty spark plug or a failing ignition coil.

Here's how to diagnose and address it:

  1. Understanding P0301:

    • P0301 specifically means 'Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected'. The engine's computer detects that cylinder 1 is not contributing power as expected.
  2. Diagnosis Steps (DIY):

    • Swap Coil Test: The easiest way to differentiate between a bad spark plug and a bad ignition coil is to swap the ignition coil from cylinder 1 to an adjacent cylinder (e.g., cylinder 2 or 3). Clear the code, drive the car, and see if the misfire code changes to the new cylinder (e.g., P0302 or P0303). If it does, the coil is bad. If the code remains P0301, the issue is likely the spark plug or something else in cylinder 1.
    • Inspect Spark Plug: If the code stays P0301 after swapping coils, remove the spark plug from cylinder 1. Inspect it for signs of fouling (oil, carbon), damage to the electrode, or incorrect gap. Compare it to a new plug or one from another cylinder.
  3. Spark Plug Replacement Interval:

    • For many modern turbocharged engines like your 1.6T, spark plug replacement intervals can range from 40,000 to 60,000 miles. At 40,000 miles, it's certainly within the window where plugs could be wearing out, especially if you drive aggressively or use lower-quality fuel.
  4. Recommendations for Parts:

    • Spark Plugs: Always use OEM-equivalent or specified iridium spark plugs. NGK and Denso are common OEM suppliers for Kia. Ensure you get the correct heat range and gap for your specific 1.6T engine. Pre-gapped plugs are common, but it's always good to double-check.
    • Ignition Coils: If a coil is faulty, it's often recommended to replace them in pairs or even all at once, as others may be close to failing. Again, OEM or high-quality aftermarket brands like Denso, Bosch, or NGK are good choices.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If the misfire persists after replacing the suspected faulty component (plug or coil).
    • If you're uncomfortable performing the diagnosis or replacement yourself.
    • If the issue points to something more complex, like a fuel injector problem (less common with just a P0301) or internal engine issues (e.g., low compression), which would require further diagnostic tools.
