Vehicle: 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line

Hi all,

I've got a 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line, and I've started noticing a distinct clunking noise coming from the front end, especially when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It's not constant, but it's definitely there when the suspension is working.

The car only has about 35,000 miles on it, so I wouldn't expect major suspension issues yet. It feels like it's coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more pronounced on the passenger side. The steering feels fine, and there's no pulling.

Has anyone else experienced this with their K5? What should I be looking for, or what are the common culprits for this kind of noise on these cars? Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2021 Kia K5 is a common symptom that can point to several issues, even on a relatively new vehicle. Here's what typically causes this and what to do:

  1. Common Causes of Front Suspension Clunking:

    • Sway Bar Links (End Links): These are very common culprits. The bushings or ball joints on the sway bar end links can wear out, leading to a clunking noise as the suspension articulates.
    • Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the lower or upper control arms can degrade or crack, allowing metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
    • Ball Joints: Worn ball joints in the control arms can cause clunking, especially when going over bumps or turning.
    • Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top strut mounts or the bearing plates can wear out, leading to noise when the suspension compresses or the steering wheel is turned.
    • Loose Components: Sometimes, a bolt on a suspension component might have loosened over time.
    • Tie Rod Ends: While less common for a clunk over bumps, worn inner or outer tie rod ends can contribute to front-end noise and looseness.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Inspection: Any persistent clunking noise from the suspension should be inspected by a qualified technician promptly. While it might not be an immediate safety hazard, worn suspension components can affect handling, tire wear, and eventually lead to more significant and costly repairs.
    • DIY Check (Caution): If you're comfortable, you can try to visually inspect for obvious signs of wear like cracked bushings or loose bolts. Gently rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then 3 and 9 o'clock (with the car safely jacked up) can sometimes reveal play in ball joints or tie rod ends, but this is best left to a professional.
    • Alignment Check: After any suspension component replacement, an alignment is crucial to ensure proper handling and tire wear.

Recommendation: Given your K5's mileage, it's most likely a worn sway bar link or a control arm bushing. A technician will lift the vehicle, inspect all suspension components for play, wear, and damage, and pinpoint the exact source of the noise. Addressing this early can prevent further wear on other components.
