Vehicle: 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line

Hey everyone,

I've got a problem with my 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line, which only has about 30,000 miles on it. For the past few weeks, there's been a really unpleasant musty, almost mildew-like smell coming from the AC vents, especially when I first turn on the air conditioning. It eventually fades a bit, but it's definitely there and quite annoying.

I haven't changed the cabin air filter since I bought the car. Could that be the culprit, even with relatively low mileage? Or is there something else I should be checking? I'm hoping it's an easy fix I can do myself.

That musty, mildew-like smell from your AC vents is a very common complaint, and thankfully, it's often an easy and inexpensive fix! Given your 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line has 30,000 miles and the cabin air filter hasn't been changed, that's definitely the first place to look.

  1. Diagnosis:

    • Cabin Air Filter: This is the most likely culprit. Over time, the cabin air filter collects dust, pollen, leaves, and moisture. This creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, which then circulates through your vents.
    • Evaporator Coil: If the filter isn't the primary issue, or if the smell persists, the evaporator coil (located behind the dashboard) can also accumulate moisture and grow mold. This is more common in humid climates or if the AC system isn't allowed to dry out.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Clogged/Dirty Cabin Air Filter: As mentioned, this is the primary suspect.
    • Mold/Mildew on Evaporator: Moisture from the AC system can condense on the evaporator coil. If it doesn't dry properly, mold can grow.
    • Blocked Condensate Drain: The AC system has a drain tube to remove condensed water. If this tube gets clogged, water can back up and sit in the system, leading to mold and odors.
  3. DIY Steps:

    • Replace Cabin Air Filter: This is a very straightforward DIY task on most Kias, including the K5. The filter is typically located behind the glove box. You'll usually just need to unclip or unscrew a few fasteners to drop the glove box down, then slide out the old filter and replace it with a new one. Be sure to note the airflow direction arrow on the new filter.
    • AC System Cleaner: If the smell persists after replacing the filter, you can try an automotive AC system cleaner/fogger. These products are designed to kill mold and bacteria on the evaporator coil and in the ducts. Follow the product instructions carefully.
    • Preventative Measures: To help prevent future odors, try turning off your AC compressor (but leave the fan running) a few minutes before you reach your destination. This allows the evaporator coil to dry out, reducing moisture for mold growth.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If the smell persists after replacing the cabin air filter and using an AC cleaner.
    • If you suspect a blocked condensate drain or a more complex issue with the AC system itself.
    • If you're uncomfortable performing the filter replacement or using the AC cleaner yourself.
