Vehicle: 2018 Kia Sorento EX

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Kia Sorento EX with the 2.4L GDI engine, and lately, I've noticed a distinct knocking sound, especially when accelerating. It's not constant, but definitely concerning. On top of that, it seems like I'm going through oil much faster than I should be.

I've been keeping up with oil changes, but the dipstick always seems low between services. Could this be related to the GDI system, or something more serious? I'm worried about potential engine damage.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with their Sorento? Any advice on what I should check or what might be causing this? Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you're describing symptoms commonly associated with the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) and potential engine issues in certain Kia GDI engines. This is a serious concern that requires immediate attention.

Possible Causes:

  1. Pre-ignition/Detonation: The knocking sound (often called 'pinging' or 'knocking') indicates uncontrolled combustion in the cylinders, which can be caused by carbon buildup on the intake valves (common in GDI engines), low-quality fuel, or incorrect ignition timing.
  2. Excessive Oil Consumption: This can be a symptom of worn piston rings, valve seals, or issues with the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system. In some cases, it can also be related to internal engine wear.
  3. KSDS Activation: The KSDS is designed to detect abnormal engine vibrations indicative of bearing wear. If activated, it can put the engine into a 'limp home' mode and illuminate the check engine light, often with a P1326 diagnostic trouble code.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If you hear persistent knocking, experience a loss of power, or if your check engine light illuminates, especially with a P1326 code, stop driving the vehicle if possible and have it towed to a reputable Kia service center.
  • Diagnostic Steps a Shop Will Take:
    1. Perform a full diagnostic scan for all stored trouble codes.
    2. Inspect the engine for external leaks and listen for the source of the knocking.
    3. Check oil pressure and perform a compression test or leak-down test to assess engine health.
    4. Inspect spark plugs and potentially use a borescope to look into the cylinders for carbon buildup or piston damage.
    5. They may also check for software updates related to the KSDS.

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to catastrophic engine failure. It's crucial to have a professional diagnose the issue promptly.
