Vehicle: 2018 Kia Sorento EX V6

Hey everyone,

I have a 2018 Kia Sorento EX V6 with about 75,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a slight shuddering sensation, especially when I'm cruising at highway speeds around 60-70 mph. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable.

I'm wondering if it's time to consider a transmission fluid change. I know Kia often says their fluid is 'lifetime,' but I've heard that's not always the best advice for longevity, especially with some light towing I do. What are the recommended intervals for a transmission fluid service on these models, particularly if you're experiencing symptoms like mine?

Is this something a competent DIYer can tackle, or is it best left to the dealership or a specialist shop? Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Sarah,

It's a common concern with Kia's 'lifetime' transmission fluid. While Kia might not specify a strict interval for normal driving, many experts and owners recommend servicing the transmission fluid, especially under severe driving conditions (which can include towing, frequent short trips, or driving in extreme temperatures). Your mileage and the shuddering symptom certainly suggest it's time to investigate.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Check Fluid Level and Condition:

    • First, check your transmission fluid level and condition. On many Kia models, this requires the engine to be at operating temperature and the vehicle level. The fluid should be reddish-pink and transparent. If it's dark brown, black, or smells burnt, it's definitely degraded.
    • Note: Some Kia transmissions have sealed systems without a traditional dipstick, requiring a specific procedure to check the level via an overflow plug.
  2. Causes of Shuddering:

    • Degraded Transmission Fluid: Old, contaminated fluid loses its lubricating and friction-modifying properties, leading to clutch pack slippage and shuddering.
    • Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter can also cause shuddering, often exacerbated by old fluid.
    • Engine Misfires: Less likely, but engine misfires can sometimes feel like a transmission issue.
  3. DIY vs. Professional Service:

    • DIY: If your Sorento has a drain plug and a fill plug, a simple drain and fill can be a DIY job. However, this only replaces a portion of the fluid. A full fluid exchange (flush) is more complex and typically requires specialized equipment.
    • Professional: For a full fluid exchange or if you're unsure about the procedure, a professional shop is recommended. They can perform a complete fluid exchange and properly diagnose the shuddering.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If the shuddering persists after a fluid change.
    • If the fluid is severely burnt or contains metal shavings.
    • If you're uncomfortable performing the service yourself.
    • If the shuddering is accompanied by other symptoms like hard shifts or warning lights.

Addressing the fluid issue promptly can often resolve shuddering and extend the life of your transmission. Good luck!
