Vehicle: 2018 Kia Sorento EX

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior with my 2018 Kia Sorento EX, which has the V6 engine and automatic transmission. For the past few weeks, the transmission has been jerking and shifting very hard, particularly when the engine is cold. It's most noticeable during the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

Once the car warms up, it seems to smooth out a bit, but the shifts are still not as smooth as they used to be. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dashboard, but the feeling is definitely not normal. The car has about 75,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else had similar issues with their Sorento? Could it be low transmission fluid, a solenoid issue, or something more serious? Any advice on what to check or what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Hard shifts and jerking, especially when cold, in a 2018 Kia Sorento can indicate several potential issues with the automatic transmission or related components.

Common Causes:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: This is a primary suspect. Low fluid levels can cause inadequate hydraulic pressure, leading to harsh shifts. Contaminated or old fluid loses its lubricating and cooling properties.
  2. Transmission Solenoid Issues: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. A faulty or sticking solenoid can cause erratic shifting.
  3. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Problems: The TCM manages transmission operation. Software glitches or a failing module can lead to incorrect shift patterns.
  4. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. Wear or blockages can affect fluid pressure and lead to shifting problems.
  5. Internal Transmission Wear: While less common at 75,000 miles if maintained, internal wear on clutches or bands could manifest as harsh shifts.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: If your Sorento has a dipstick, check the fluid level according to the owner's manual instructions (usually with the engine warm and running). Note the fluid's color and smell; burnt smell or dark color indicates contamination. For sealed units, this requires a shop.
  2. Scan for Codes: Even without a dash light, a professional scan tool can sometimes reveal pending or stored transmission-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), such as P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific solenoid codes.

When to See a Shop:

Given the complexity of modern transmissions, it's highly recommended to have a reputable transmission specialist or Kia dealership inspect your Sorento promptly. They can accurately diagnose the issue by:

  • Performing a thorough diagnostic scan.
  • Checking transmission fluid pressure.
  • Inspecting the valve body and solenoids.
  • Potentially performing a transmission fluid flush and filter replacement if recommended.

Ignoring transmission issues can lead to more severe and costly repairs down the line.
