Vehicle: 2020 Kia Sorento SX

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a really annoying issue with my 2020 Kia Sorento SX. When I apply the brakes, especially at highway speeds, I feel a distinct pulsation through the pedal. It's not a smooth stop at all.

Along with the pulsating brake pedal, I've noticed a vibration in the steering wheel during braking. It's become quite noticeable over the last few weeks. The car has about 65,000 miles on it, and I'm not sure what could be causing this.

Could this be warped rotors, or something more serious with the calipers or suspension? Any advice on what I should check first would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This sounds like a classic case of issues related to your brake system. The symptoms you're describing, a pulsating brake pedal and steering wheel vibration during braking, are very common and usually point to a few specific problems:

  1. Warped Brake Rotors: This is the most frequent cause. Over time, rotors can develop uneven surfaces due to heat stress or improper installation/torquing. When the brake pads contact these uneven surfaces, it causes the pulsation you feel in the pedal and the vibration in the steering wheel.
  2. Uneven Brake Pad Wear: If your brake pads are wearing unevenly, or if they have hard spots, they can also contribute to a pulsating feel.
  3. Sticking Brake Caliper: A caliper that isn't releasing properly can cause excessive heat on one side of the rotor, leading to warping, and can also create drag and vibration.
  4. Suspension Components: While less common for these specific symptoms, worn ball joints, tie rod ends, or wheel bearings could exacerbate brake-related vibrations.

Diagnostic Steps:

  • Visual Inspection: Check your brake pads for uneven wear and your rotors for visible scoring or discoloration.
  • Rotor Runout: A mechanic can measure the 'runout' (how much the rotor deviates from being perfectly flat) using a dial indicator. This will confirm if your rotors are indeed warped.
  • Calipers: Inspect calipers for fluid leaks and ensure they slide freely.

When to see a shop: Given the safety-critical nature of brakes, it's highly recommended to have your Sorento inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. They can accurately diagnose the root cause and recommend the appropriate repairs, which will likely involve replacing or machining the brake rotors and potentially the brake pads. Driving with compromised brakes can significantly reduce your stopping power and overall safety.
