Vehicle: 2020 Kia Sorento SX

Hi all, I'm having some worrying issues with my 2020 Kia Sorento SX. It has the 8-speed automatic transmission. Lately, it's been jerking quite noticeably, especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd.

There's also a noticeable delay when shifting into drive from park. It's got about 60,000 miles. No check engine light yet, but it feels really rough. Is this a common problem?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission jerking and delayed shifts in your 2020 Kia Sorento SX are concerning symptoms that indicate a potential issue with the 8-speed automatic transmission. While no check engine light is present yet, these symptoms suggest mechanical or hydraulic problems.

Common Causes:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Incorrect fluid levels or old, degraded fluid can cause erratic shifting.
  2. Solenoid Issues: Faulty transmission solenoids can lead to incorrect fluid pressure, causing harsh shifts or delays.
  3. Valve Body Problems: The valve body directs fluid flow within the transmission; issues here can result in poor shifting performance.
  4. Software Glitch: Sometimes, a transmission control module (TCM) software update can resolve minor shifting anomalies.
  5. Internal Wear: Less common at 60,000 miles but possible, internal wear of clutches or bands could cause slipping or harsh engagement.

What to Do:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: If safe to do so, check the transmission fluid level and condition (color, smell). Note that many modern transmissions are 'sealed for life' or require specific procedures to check fluid, so this might be a shop task.
  2. Scan for Pending Codes: Even without a check engine light, a professional scan tool might reveal pending transmission-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that haven't illuminated the dash light yet.
  3. Document Symptoms: Keep a detailed record of when the jerking occurs (e.g., cold start, specific gears, acceleration level).

When to See a Shop: It's advisable to have your Sorento inspected by a qualified transmission specialist or a Kia dealership soon. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly transmission damage. They can perform a diagnostic scan, check fluid, and assess the transmission's internal health.
