Vehicle: 2018 Kia Sorento EX V6

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Kia Sorento EX V6, and for the past few weeks, I've been hearing a really annoying squealing sound from the brakes. It's most noticeable when I'm braking lightly or coming to a stop at low speeds, like in a parking lot or traffic. It doesn't seem to happen when I brake hard.

I had the pads and rotors checked about 6 months ago, and they said everything looked good then. Could it be something else? I'm worried it might be a bigger issue than just worn pads, especially since it's so consistent.

Any ideas on what might be causing this and what I should look into? Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Squealing brakes are a common complaint, and while often benign, they can sometimes indicate an underlying issue. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Normal Wear Indicators: Many brake pads have a small metal tab that scrapes against the rotor when pads are low, producing a squeal. This is a sign it's time for replacement.
    • Glazed Pads/Rotors: Overheating can cause the friction material on pads or the surface of rotors to harden, leading to a squeal. This can happen from aggressive braking or prolonged downhill braking.
    • Contamination: Dirt, dust, road grime, or even brake fluid/grease on the pads or rotors can cause noise.
    • Improper Installation: If pads or rotors were recently replaced, improper installation (e.g., missing anti-squeal shims, incorrect lubrication on caliper pins) can lead to noise.
    • Rust: Surface rust on rotors, especially after rain or sitting for a few days, can cause temporary squealing until it's worn off by braking.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent Squeal: If the squeal is constant and doesn't go away after a few stops, or if it's accompanied by a grinding noise, it's critical to have it inspected immediately.
    • Reduced Braking Performance: Any noticeable decrease in your Sorento's stopping power, or a spongy/hard pedal, warrants an immediate professional inspection.
    • Vibration: If you feel vibrations through the pedal or steering wheel when braking, this could indicate warped rotors or other issues.
    • Visual Inspection: If you can visually see that your brake pads are very thin (less than 3-4mm), it's time for replacement.

Recommendation: Since you mentioned the pads were checked 6 months ago, it's possible they've worn down since then, or perhaps they've become glazed. A professional technician can perform a thorough inspection, which may include cleaning and lubricating caliper components, resurfacing rotors, or replacing pads if necessary. They can also check for any loose components in the braking system.
