Vehicle: 2022 Kia Sportage SX Prestige

I'm getting a 'Blind Spot Monitor Malfunction' warning on my 2022 Kia Sportage SX Prestige. It pops up intermittently, sometimes staying on for a whole drive, other times disappearing after a few minutes. When the warning is active, the BSM system obviously doesn't work, and the indicators in the mirrors don't light up.

I've checked the sensors in the rear bumper for any dirt or obstructions, and everything looks clean. There haven't been any recent bumps or accidents. I'm wondering if this is a common issue with the newer Sportage models or if it's something I should be seriously concerned about.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a simple reset I can try, or does this sound like a sensor replacement is in my future?

A 'Blind Spot Monitor Malfunction' warning on your 2022 Kia Sportage SX Prestige indicates an issue with the radar sensors or the associated control module. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Sensor Obstruction:

    • Re-check: Even if they look clean, ensure the rear bumper areas where the radar sensors are located (usually on the corners) are completely free of dirt, ice, snow, stickers, or even heavy layers of wax. Sometimes, even a minor obstruction can interfere with the radar signal.
    • License Plate Frames: Ensure your license plate frame isn't obstructing any part of the sensor's field of view.
  2. System Reset:

    • Ignition Cycle: Sometimes, simply turning the vehicle off, waiting a few minutes, and restarting it can clear a temporary glitch.
    • Battery Disconnect: For a more thorough reset, you can disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-20 minutes. Be aware this might reset other vehicle settings like radio presets.
  3. Potential Causes:

    • Faulty Sensor: The radar sensor itself could be failing intermittently. These sensors are complex electronic components.
    • Wiring Issue: A loose, corroded, or damaged wire or connector leading to the BSM sensors or module could cause intermittent communication problems.
    • BSM Control Module: The module that processes the sensor data could be malfunctioning.
    • Calibration Issue: If the vehicle has had any work done on the rear bumper or suspension, the BSM sensors might require recalibration.
  4. OBD-II Codes:

    • A BSM malfunction will almost certainly store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the vehicle's computer system, specifically within the BSM module. These are often 'U' codes (network communication issues) or 'C' codes (chassis-related sensor faults). Examples might include U0155 (Lost Communication with BSM Module) or C1611 (BSM Sensor Malfunction).
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • Given that this is a safety feature, it's highly recommended to have your Kia dealership or a qualified independent shop diagnose the issue. They have specialized scan tools that can read manufacturer-specific BSM codes and perform live data monitoring to pinpoint the exact cause. They can also test the sensors and wiring, and perform any necessary recalibrations or replacements. Do not ignore this warning, as it compromises a key safety system.
